Equinoxe Films and Righteous Alliance Entertainment are pleased to announce that FINCH AND MIDLAND, written and directed by Timothy Yeung, will be released in select Canadian cities on Friday, February 13th with charity events and screenings slated for Wednesday, February 11th at the Cineplex Varsity Cinemas in Toronto, ON and on Thursday, February 12th at the Cineplex Markham Cinemas in downtown Markham, ON.
“We chose to title the film, Finch & Midland, because it’s a well known area for many Chinese immigrants who decided to settle in the GTA back in the late ‘90s and early 2000s,” says Yeung. “And Scarborough is still a very welcoming place for new immigrants that have chosen to call Canada home.”
“We wanted to support these two specific charities based in Scarborough – Community Family Services of Ontario and Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities – because they do so much for newcomers,” continues Ridley Tsui, Executive Producer. “We will be hosting a reception with some of our cast before each preview screening, and a portion of the evenings’ ticket sales will go towards these organizations.”
FINCH AND MIDLAND follows four Hong Kong immigrants navigating fractured family ties, career challenges, and the search for love and belonging. Each story showcases not only the characters’ struggles but also highlights the hope and resilience that play a big part in the lives of all immigrants as they strive to embrace Canadian culture. The film features a Hong Kong and Canadian cast including Anthony Wong (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Infernal Affairs, Hard Boiled), Patrick Tam (Fight for Tomorrow, Mutant, Beast Cops), Nina Paw (aka Hee Ching Paw, Mou Ming Zi, Jue Ming Fa Guan, Lost in Time), Harriet Yeung (Hit N Fun, Port of Call, The Sparring Partner), Theresa Lee (Ruthless Bastards, Condor Heroes, Ai wei yang, Son of the Dragon), Dmitry Chepovetsky (Children Ruin Everything, Murdoch Mysteries, MI: Ghost Protocol) and Jaden Kwan (Chucky).
On Wednesday, February 11th, the reception will be starting at 5PM at Yueh Tung Restaurant in Toronto prior to the Cineplex Varsity Cinemas 7PM screening. Righteous Alliance Entertainment (RAE) and F&M Productions are excited to announce that Canadian production FINCH & MIDLAND has secured Canadian distribution through Equinoxe Films. The highly anticipated project recently wrapped filming in the GTA and is now set for global audiences, with Equinoxe Films also overseeing international sales.
President of Equinoxe Films, Michael Mosca, shared his enthusiasm for bringing this unique story to both Canadian and international audiences;
“FINCH & MIDLAND is a remarkable film that embodies the rich diversity of Canadian cinema, and we are proud to be a part of this journey. The film’s exploration of immigrant experiences in Canada, combined with its predominantly Cantonese-speaking cast, highlights the unique stories that make our country’s film industry so vibrant. We are eager to share this powerful story with audiences not only here in Canada but around the world.”
With a distinctly Canadian voice and featuring a predominantly diverse Asian cast, FINCH & MIDLAND stands out as one of the few Canadian productions to tell such an intimate and authentic immigrant story. The film, written and directed by Timothy Yeung, is inspired by the lives of Hong Kong immigrants who came to Canada in the mid 90s to settle in the Finch and Midland area of Toronto. An anthology, FINCH & MIDLAND tackles themes of survival, identity, and community through their individual struggles and shared hope.
Executive Producer and CEO of RAE, Ridley Tsui, stated, “Equinoxe Films has a strong track record of amplifying Canadian voices with international appeal. This distribution deal is a crucial step in ensuring that the community-driven stories in FINCH & MIDLAND reach a global audience. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished and excited to take this next step with the team at Equinoxe.”
Executive produced by Ridley Tsui and Annie Lee, and produced by Kim Yu, the film’s talented cast includes a mix of celebrated Hong Kong stars and Canadian actors, including Anthony Wong Chau Sang (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Infernal Affairs, Hard Boiled), Nina Paw Hee Ching (The Way We Are, Lost in Time), Patrick Tam (Fight for Tomorrow, Beast Cops), Harriet Yeung Tze Man (The Sparring Partner, Port of Call) and former Miss Hong Kong finalist, Theresa Lee (Condor Heroes, The Legendary Siblings), as well as Canadian actor Dmitry Chepovetsky (Children Ruin Everything, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol).
Producer Kim Yu was moved by the script, “FINCH & MIDLAND will hopefully resonate with many people as its themes are universal. Beyond just our community, its stories are poignant and reflect the challenges many have faced in order to settle in a new country.” About the support the crew received while filming, Yu added “We are grateful to so many in our community, from local businesses to community leaders, and countless others who supported the production by providing extra food for the crew, props, and locations. We are also buoyed by the generosity of leading industry suppliers like Keslow Camera, Cinelease, and Urban Post, who have helped ensure we have optimal equipment for this passion project.”
As FINCH & MIDLAND enters post-production, RAE and F&M Productions would like to extend their gratitude to the diverse cast and crew, the local community, and all partners who helped bring this story to life.
