The Canadian Film Centre (CFC) and CBC are pleased to announce another remarkable group of performers who will make up the 2024 cohort of the CBC Actors Conservatory starting September 3, 2024 at CFC’s campus in Toronto and running until February 28, 2025.
Eight exciting actors with a range of experience in film, television, and theatre have been selected to participate in the 2024 Conservatory. This full-time, six-month immersive screen acting program will provide hands-on experience, expand the performer’s reel and their instrument, establish strong creative partnerships, grow their professional network, strengthen their abilities to navigate the business, and help build their confidence.
“The CBC Actors Conservatory has helped strengthen and expand Canada’s on-screen talent network and by extension the industry as a whole. We’re proud to continue our partnership with the CFC to offer mentorship and training to this year’s dynamic group of performers – we wish them all the best in the program,” said Trish Williams, Executive Director, Scripted Content, CBC.
Thanks to the generous support of program partners CBC, the RBC Emerging Artists Project and the Government of Ontario, the CBC Actors Conservatory has supported and helped elevate the voices and talent of over 112 actors including Supinder Wraich (Allegiance, Sort Of), Lovell Adams-Gray (Coroner, Brother), Andy McQueen (Station Eleven), Michelle McLeod (Women Talking), Patrick Kwok-Choon (Star Trek: Discovery), Giacomo Gianniotti (Wild Cards, Grey’s Anatomy), Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek) and Eli Goree (One Night In Miami).
“We’ve met so many wonderful actors from across this country reinforcing what an inspiring and creatively resilient talent community we have,” said Kathryn Emslie, Executive Lead, Programs, CFC. “This program and our longstanding partnership with the CBC is all about nurturing and celebrating the incredible contribution actors and actor/creators make to the storytelling process and to the stories that need to be told. I cannot wait to see how these actors shape the future of storytelling!”

Hawco Productions and CBC today announced that production is underway on new original series SAINT-PIERRE (10 x 60’), a new episodic police procedural currently filming in Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, France and St. John’s Newfoundland. SAINT-PIERRE is the creation of Allan Hawco, Robina Lord-Stafford and Perry Chafe, with Hawco and Lord-Stafford as Showrunners. TJ Scott and John Vatcher will each direct two of the first four episodes, with Scott directing the pilot. The series will premiere on CBC and CBC Gem in Winter 2025 and is produced in association with global film and TV studio FIFTH SEASON, which is also handling global distribution on the show.
SAINT-PIERRE’s cast includes French star Josephine Jobert (Death in Paradise) as Arch, Canadian star, Allan Hawco (Republic of Doyle, Caught, Jack Ryan) as Fitz, and James Purefoy as Sean Gallagher (Rome, Sex Education, The Following) rounding out the stellar team.
After the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Inspector, Donny Fitzpatrick (Fitz), digs too deeply into a local politician’s nefarious activity, he is exiled to work in Saint-Pierre et Miquelon – the French Territory nestled in the Atlantic Ocean. Fitz’s arrival disrupts the life of Deputy Chief Geneviève Archambault (Arch), a Parisian transplant who is in Saint-Pierre for her own intriguing reasons.
As if by fate, these two seasoned officers — with very different policing skills and approaches — are forced together to solve unique and exciting crimes. Although the islands seem like a quaint tourist destination, the idyllic façade conceals the worst kind of criminal activity, which tend to wash up on its beautiful shores. At first at odds and suspicious of each other, Arch and Fitz soon discover that they are better together.
“Saint-Pierre et Miquelon is a unique place – the islands’ isolated location between North America and Europe makes it an ideal location to go unnoticed by the law, which sets it up to be the perfect place for this story,” says Hawco, Lord-Stafford and Chafe. “We’re excited for audiences to discover these compelling characters in this rarely seen before landscape.”
“SAINT-PIERRE offers audiences a fresh and exciting new procedural led by the talented duo of Allan and Josephine, set in a beautiful location that so many Canadians are curious about,” said Sally Catto, General Manager, Entertainment, Factual & Sports, CBC. “We look forward to working with Allan, Robina and Hawco Productions to bring Fitz and Arch’s adventures to life onscreen.”
Ava Mustos, Associate Director, Acquisitions at FIFTH SEASON, said: “It’s fantastic to be partnering with Allan Hawco on SAINT-PIERRE, a detective drama with a brilliant blend of mystery and humour, set against the vibrant and unique back drop of France’s Saint-Pierre et Miquelon islands. We’re delighted to have Josephine Jobert – already known to audiences from Death in Paradise – as our co-lead alongside Hawco. The chemistry between them is undeniable and we look forward to introducing audiences around the world to this dynamic, crime-solving duo.”
A CBC original production, SAINT-PIERRE is produced by Hawco Productions in association with global film and TV studio FIFTH SEASON. The new series is executive produced by Janine Squires, Erin Sullivan, Robina Lord-Stafford, Perry Chafe, John Vatcher and Hawco. For CBC, Sally Catto is General Manager, Entertainment, Factual & Sports; Trish Williams is Executive Director, Scripted Content; Sarah Adams is Director of Current Production, Drama; and Nicola Makoway is Executive in Charge of Production.
Hawco Productions was founded by actor, writer and producer Allan Hawco, harnessing his extensive experience from previous projects, his six successful seasons playing the lead and serving as the executive producer and showrunner on Republic of Doyle, and more recently, producing other CBC shows like Son of a Critch and Caught. Allan also has an international presence in projects that include Amazon’s Jack Ryan, Book of Negroes, and Quicksand.

ORIGINAL COMEDY SLATE
This upcoming broadcast and streaming year, CBC and CBC Gem will continue to be the home for fresh original Canadian comedy with three new series spanning communities and perspectives across the country, including Nunavut-set NORTH OF NORTH following a young Inuk mother as she tries to build a new future for herself in her small town; SMALL ACHIEVABLE GOALS, an honest and hilarious look at menopause and middle age; and SNOTTY NOSE REZ KIDS, inspired by the chaotic journey of the Indigenous hip-hop duo. The series join long-running news satire comedy THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES, including a U.S. election special, and authentic family comedy SON OF A CRITCH, which enters the ‘90s as Mark embarks on new adventures in high school.
New Original Comedy Series
NORTH OF NORTH (Premieres Winter 2025, 8×30, Red Marrow Media and Northwood Entertainment)
Siaja (Anna Lambe, True Detective: Night Country, Trickster) is a young Inuk mother who wants to build a new future for herself. After a spontaneous — and extremely public — exit from her marriage, Siaja has to find a job and a place for her and her young daughter to live, and fast. Her only option might be to go from one complicated living situation to another — where Siaja’s dreams of a fresh start collide with some long-kept secrets. To top it all off, this is happening in a small Arctic town where everybody knows your business. A comedy series commissioned by CBC, Netflix and APTN, NORTH OF NORTH is created by Stacey Aglok MacDonald (Qanurli, The Grizzlies) and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril (Angry Inuk, The Grizzlies) of Red Marrow Media and produced alongside executive producer Miranda de Pencier (Anne with an E, Beginners, The Grizzlies) of Northwood Entertainment. Anya Adams (Yellowjackets, Ginny & Georgia), Susan Coyne (Mozart in the Jungle, Daisy Jones & The Six) and Garry Campbell (The Kids in the Hall, Less Than Kind) also executive produce.
SMALL ACHIEVABLE GOALS (Premieres Winter 2025, 10×30, Sphere Media)
When odd couple Jan (Jennifer Whalen) and Kris (Meredith MacNeill) are forced to work together to produce a podcast, they learn they are both undergoing “The Change” – aka menopause – and embark on a journey of transformation, helping each other through workplace challenges and office politics, dating and relationship drama, and some serious health concerns. Like a phoenix from the ashes, they will be reborn as sexy, silver-haired, wizard women! Or at least wiser, less sweaty versions of themselves… Created by Jennifer Whalen and Meredith MacNeill, who are executive producers with Jennifer Kawaja, Bruno Dube and Elise Cousineau.
SNOTTY NOSE REZ KIDS (Premieres 2025, 8×30, Snotty Nose Productions, Grand Scheme and Reality Distortion Field in association with Redcloud Studios)
The not even true, real life story of the Indigenous hip hop sensation Snotty Nose Rez Kids chronicling their tireless hustle and chaotic journey to stardom. The series is inspired by the lives of best friends Quinton and Darren, who move from their remote Haisla Nation to the big city of Vancouver to chase their hip hop dreams. Throughout a series of misadventures they lean on their newfound community to kick start their career as Snotty Nose Rez Kids. Created by Quinton Nyce and Darren Metz, Vance Banzo and Matt Kippen; Jennifer Podemski is the series’ showrunner, and an executive producer with Metz, Nyce, Michael Tanko Grand, Stephen Hegyes, Simon Barry, Banzo, Kippen and Bhavika Mantri; Amber-Sekowan Daniels is co-executive producer.

In Season 2 of this high-concept drama series, a new character is given the opportunity to change her life – and the lives of those around her – by making use of Plan B, a mysterious time-travel agency. After Montreal police officer Mia Coleman (Vinessa Antoine, Diggstown) and her partner Tyler take a lenient approach to a marital dispute, the husband, Paul Whitman, murders his wife Keri and their two small children, then kills himself. Mia is devastated, but soon stumbles across Plan B and finds herself able to book a trip into the past, and perhaps alter the outcome. Along the way, Mia discovers the astonishing potential of Plan B to alter the balance between criminals and victims, making her the most effective cop on the force. As always, though, Plan B guarantees no easy solutions, and Mia’s journey into the past is replete with unexpected quicksands. Producer Robert Lang (Why We Dance, Museum Secrets) and director Michelle Mama (Shine True) bring Kensington Communications’ latest project Fluid: Life Beyond the Binary to CBC’s The Nature of Things launching on March 28, 2024 at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT) on CBC and CBC Gem. Hosted by the award-winning non-binary comedian Mae Martin, the film explores the little-known science of gender and sexual fluidity in the natural world.
Fluid debunks dangerous pseudo-scientific myths and introduces cutting-edge research to reveal that in a very real and measurable sense, we are all gender fluid.
“There is no one better equipped to host Fluid than Mae Martin and there is no better time for audiences to have access to the revelations in the film. Blending humour with science, Mae sheds light on the most recent findings about gender and sexual fluidity in humans and many other species.” said producer Robert Lang. “They were an incredibly thoughtful collaborator on this project and we look forward to sharing our special documentary with audiences across the country.”
Guided by eminent biologists Joan Roughgarden and Justin Rhodes and famed primatologist Frans de Waal, Mae discovers a hermaphroditic ginger plant, sex-changing clownfish and kobudai, and mammals – lions, hyenas and chimpanzees – that display surprisingly non-normative sexual traits.
In the realm of human research, Mae meets with trans historian Jules Gill-Peterson to explore the misguided but unfortunately still influential gender studies of the 1960s and 70s. Then Mae delves into the current gender controversies, seeking out the best and most up-to-date answers from brilliant researchers including child psychologist Kristina Olson, prominent neuroscientists Gillian Einstein and Lise Eliot, and three young trans/non-binary scientists – Daniel Pfau, Elle Lett and Simone Sun – who take on the challenges of gender research from a gender non-conforming perspective.
Mae also meets a group of trans youth who candidly reveal their difficult life experiences and hopes for a future that is more inclusive and accepting. Along the way, Mae shares reflections through relevant and hilarious material from their live standup performances.
Fluid is produced by Kensington Communications in association with CBC, SRC Explora and Gay Agenda, with the financial participation of Canada Media Fund, Rogers Documentary Fund, Ontario and Canada tax credits. Other key creatives include Director of Photography Lulu Wei (Sex With Sue), editor Peter Topalovic (Shine True, Canada’s Drag Race), and writer Allen Booth (Why We Dance, Nature’s Cleanup Crew), with music by Ames Bessada (Black Mirror). For CBC, Sally Catto is General Manager, Entertainment, Factual, & Sports; Jennifer Dettman is Executive Director, Unscripted Content; Sandra Kleinfeld is Senior Director, Documentary; and Sue Dando and Lesley Birchard are Executives in Charge of Production, The Nature of Things.
This was such a blast! We love that CBC is embracing the K-Pop phenomenom with brand-new ten episode series GANGNAM PROJECT! We got to attend a fun celebration for the Series with most of the Cast in attendance. There were Korean drinks and snacks, plus an intro the Cast. We hear lead Julia Kim Caldwell was busy with studies and unable to make it! Why is this so ironic, considering she plays a tutor who finds herself unexpectedly on the path to stardom? This streams now on CBC Gem!
Some highlights from the bash:
Synopsis:
Set in Korea, GANGNAM PROJECT tells the story of Hannah Shin (Julia Kim Caldwell), a spirited Canadian/Korean teen with dreams of becoming a K-pop star and connecting with her Korean heritage. One summer, she accepts a job as an English tutor and flies to South Korea to work at an elite K-pop training school and ends up getting much more than she bargained for. Hannah is tasked with tutoring one of the school’s top students, Chan-Mi, who is proving a little challenging.
In a bid to win her and the other students over, Hannah showcases her talent with some impromptu performances, but instead her talents attract the attention of the school’s owner which leads to the opportunity to become a student herself. Along with singing, dancing and Korean lessons, there’s a lot of drama – Kdrama, especially when Hannah discovers that her father had once been a K-pop star himself!
The series celebrates the world of K-pop featuring an original soundtrack composed by recording artist, songwriter, producer and musician, August Rigo, who has written songs for global talents including K-pop superstar group BTS (Black Swan and On, amassing over 1 billion views combined on YouTube), U Smile for Justin Bieber and Gotta Be You for One Direction.
