#REVIEW: “OH, HI!”
Review by Amanda Gilmore for Mr. Will Wong
This Sundance hit is a genre-bending Film that knows who its audience is.
Oh, Hi! follows Iris (Molly Gordon) and Isaac (Logan Lerman), two twenty-somethings who embark on their first romantic weekend getaway. After escaping the city for a remote upstate house, a routine discussion about exclusivity spins wildly out of control. Iris chains Isaac to the bed in an attempt to make him understand they share a special bond and should be in a committed relationship. From that moment on, the Film becomes a wacky Comedy about the horrors of a situationship.
This is a Film that satirizes modern dating rituals. There are many tonal shifts from light-hearted slapstick to genuine emotional tension. Additionally, the Film switches between a romantic comedy and a thriller. Thus, audiences seeking a conventional genre feature may find themselves off-balance. But for those open to an off-kilter exploration of relational ambiguity, Oh, Hi! offers plenty of bite alongside its laughs.
At the heart of this production are Molly Gordon and Logan Lerman, who fully understand the assignment. Gordon delivers a measured comedic performance as Iris, embodying the archetype of a partner desperate to seize a commitment that may never have existed. She exposes her character’s vulnerability beneath the absurdity. Lerman’s Isaac complements her with measured restraint, often delivering deadpan reactions that provide a perfect counterpoint to Iris’s outlandish behaviour.
Brooks’s Screenplay strikes an effective balance between satire and drama. And the central duo’s dynamic drives home the Film’s thematic ambition. Their interplay transforms a far-fetched premise into a surprisingly incisive commentary on how modern courtship can feel more like a hostage situation than a love story.
Overall, for the intended audience, viewers who relish darkly comedic takes, Oh, Hi! delivers a controlled, clever, and ultimately memorable romp.
Mongrel Media release OH, HI! in cinemas on Friday, July 25, 2025.
