Hot on the heels of the BFI’s major UK-wide film program, CINEMA UNBOUND: THE CREATIVE WORLDS OF POWELL AND PRESSBURGER, and in partnership with the BFI, TIFF Cinematheque will be debuting Of Myth and Magic: The Films of Powell and Pressburger, presented by ISTIC ILLIC PICTURES, on May 10. A celebration of one of the greatest and most enduring filmmaking duos in the history of cinema, this is the first stop on its North American tour. Michael Powell (1905–1990) and Emeric Pressburger (1902–1988), collectively known as The Archers, are best known for their iconic films such as The Red Shoes (1948); A Matter of Life And Death (1946); Black Narcissus (1947); and 49th Parallel (1941), the Academy Award–winning, Canadian-set film about the Second World War.
This 10-film retrospective includes two iconic solo efforts directed by Powell, and eight of the The Archers’ most infamous and influential creations: new 35mm projection prints of previously restored The Red Shoes, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, The Tales of Hoffmann, and Black Narcissus, made with funding from The National Lottery for the BFI’s Film on Film campaign; as well as two newly completed restorations by the BFI National Archive and The Film Foundation of Peeping Tom in association with Studiocanal, and I Know Where I’m Going!, in association with ITV and Park Circus. Plus, see rare BFI archive prints of The Thief of Bagdad and 49th Parallel. The Archers’ quintessentially British collaboration resulted in a singular aesthetic vision caught between the twin fascinations of human desire and an otherworldly belief in the mystic, and would go on to inspire generations of filmmakers and artists alike, including: Martin Scorsese, Guillermo del Toro, Greta Gerwig, Francis Ford Coppola, and Tilda Swinton.
Also announced today, a spotlight on the early films of South Korean director and screenwriter Lee Chang-dong featuring new 4K restorations of Green Fish, Peppermint Candy, and Oasis. This series is generously supported by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea. Plus, two of Ann Hui’s films will be programmed as part of Asian Heritage Month: a new restoration of Hui’s July Rhapsody; and a 35mm print of the acclaimed and beautifully moving Boat People, screening as part of Cameron Bailey’s From the Collection series.
Among the highlights in May are TIFF’s free monthly series of Canadian cinematic treasures, See the North, presented by MUBI, featuring Octavio is Dead! and a post-show Q&A with filmmaker Sook-Yin Lee, who also stars in the 2018 film; following its World Premiere at Sundance, MDFF Selects presents the Toronto premiere of Babak Jalali’s Fremont, starring Anaita Wali Zada and Jeremy Allen White; Radu Jude’s Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World (TIFF ’23), part comedy and part montage road movie; and TIFF WavelengthsPresentsFilm Talks: A Touring Programme of Experimental Cinema, with curators Andrew Vallance and Simon Payne in attendance.

Rumours, a cautionary dramedy cum erotico-ministerial techno-thriller and provisional Götterdämmerung written and directed by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, has been accepted, with only minimal reservations, misgivings, caveats, and scruples, by the Official Selection committee of the Cannes Film Festival, a regional cinema conference and entertainment expo held every single year, almost without exception, in the south of France.
The famous festival, named for the humble, salt-of-the-earth fishing village in which its screenings are held and which, in 154 BC, was the site of a brief but violent conflict between the troops of Quintus
Optimus and the Oxbii, is known for its sandy beaches and the noonday torpor of its local vendors.
Rumours’ Canuck helmers had this to say: “Compelled by the looming doomsdays with which we are become too familiar, seduced by the eschatological sinuosities inscribed provocatively across our sulphur-clotted skies, with nothing but hopelessness to console ourselves, and with our chill-blasted souls much in need of the warmth sometimes only nostalgia can provide, we directors have turned our despairing attentions, rosary beads chattering like teeth in our skeletal fingers, to the quaint old customs of diplomacy — namely the G7!”
Along with the above-quoted cri de coeur, the three co-helmers have released a photographic still image from their film, an image that it would hardly be an exaggeration to call “a moral triumph”, nor would anyone be mocked or criticized for saying so.
Addendum from Executive Producer Ari Aster: “The fact that Guy Maddin, the most idiosyncratic and original Canadian filmmaker of the ’20s and ’30s, found Evan and Galen Johnson, the most idiosyncratic and original Canadian filmmakers of the moment, is miraculous. The fact that they have departed so freely from their brilliant work of the last decade, while still retaining their prodigious gift for hyperbolic wordplay and their endless comic and aesthetic invention, is more miraculous yet. RUMOURS is stoopid and hilarious and wonderful, and it features the best cast ever assembled. The spirit of Buñuel and Monty Python and overwrought ’70s television (and of course the Maddin/Johnson sensibility, which has no real analogue) is alive and strange.”

Prime Video today announced it has ordered Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?, with Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce set as host. The 20-episode order is a spinoff of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and is being produced by MGM Alternative, a division of Amazon MGM Studios. The series will premiere on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity? offers a fun, new twist on the premise of the original popular format. Each game will welcome an adult contestant who will rely on a classroom full of celebrities from stage, screen, and sports to help them answer 11 questions on a range of subjects, pulled from elementary curriculum, in an effort to win a $100,000 prize. They are not competing against the stars…they’re enlisting their help and, in some cases, can even “cheat” off of them. And on the final question, worth $100,000, the contestant selects one celebrity to discuss the answer with before locking in. The final question is always at the 6th-grade level.
Fresh off his victory at Super Bowl LVIII, Kelce, one of the most recognizable names in sports and pop culture, turns his attention to his first major television role as host of Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity? An eight-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro, Kelce continues to pad his Hall of Fame resume, reaching milestones that make him one of the greatest tight ends of all time. In addition to being a generational talent and the co-host of the top-charting sports podcast, New Heights, Kelce is building a portfolio across industries. He has a passion for the entertainment business and an interest in bringing more live events, entertainment, and community initiatives anchored in music, sports, fashion, and comedy to his diverse global audience.
“I grew up loving game shows, and I’m excited to be following in the footsteps of so many TV icons by hosting my very first one with Are you Smarter than a Celebrity. The original show is a great success, so to be bringing a new format with everyone’s favorite celebrities to the screen, will definitely be entertaining. I’m just happy to be on the hosting side of the equation here and excited to see how these famous faces keep up,” said Travis Kelce.
“For years, fans around the world have tested their smarts with this fun, nostalgic game show, and we look forward to bring this reimagined format to Prime Video,” says Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD originals unscripted and targeted programming, Amazon MGM Studios. “Travis has proven to be an incredible talent on and off the field, and we appreciate the trust he has placed in us with his first foray into television. His natural, comedic dynamic with our panelists and guests, coupled with some exciting new twists, will keep our global customers coming back week after week.”
“After producing more than 3,000 episodes of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? globally, we wanted to come up with a new, loud twist on the format. Replacing the kids with celebrities gives us more laughs and surprises, like a roast, as contestants cheat off their famous classmates,” said Barry Poznick, general manager of MGM Alternative and co-creator of the series. “And now, with the ultimate class clown, Travis Kelce, hosting, viewers should expect the unexpected!”
The original U.S. version of the Emmy-nominated Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader was co-created by Poznick and John Steven. The game show premiered in 2007 to a record-breaking 27 million viewers[1] and a cumulative audience of more than 800 million total viewers during its run[2]. Since 2007, it has remained the No. 1 game-show premiere in broadcast television history[3]. Since first being introduced, the series has seen 55 countries produce local versions, with more than 3,000 original episodes produced globally. The Are You Smarter brand continues to be relevant today, inspiring late-night versions of the show and millions of dollars in merchandise, including a board game, a companion book and apparel.
Wes Kauble will serve as showrunner, with Kauble and Mark Burnett executive producing. Sean Kelly and Steve Hughes will serve as co-executive producers. The format is distributed by Amazon MGM Studios Distribution.

In recognition of the 25th anniversary of her double platinum-selling album Colour Moving and Still, JUNO and Grammy Award-winning artist Chantal Kreviazuk has announced a deluxe edition re-release on double vinyl coming October 4. Kreviazuk will celebrate the anniversary with a special homecoming concert at Toronto’s Massey Hall on November 8, where she will perform the album in its entirety plus some of her other popular hit songs. Tickets go on sale this Friday at 10:00 AM, with pre-sale access to Massey Hall FriendsFirst members this Wednesday at 10:00 AM.
The Colour Moving and Still double LP will include all 10 tracks from the album remastered, her iconic recording of “Leaving on a Jet Plane” and six previously unreleased live recordings, being produced on 180 gram vinyl, via Sony Music Entertainment Canada Inc. This is the first time that Colour Moving and Still has ever been made available on vinyl.
Colour Moving and Still was the follow-up to Kreviazuk’s debut breakthrough album Under These Rocks and Stones, and helped Kreviazuk continue to establish herself as an artist beloved and revered in North America and across the globe, setting her up for an impressive career as both a musician and songwriter that continues today, nearly three decades and counting.
First released on October 5, 1999, Colour Moving and Still features one of Kreviazuk’s biggest songs of her career “Before You,” inspired by her husband Raine Maida, who she married just before the album’s release. Now a seasoned songwriting duo, Kreviazuk and Maida wrote together for the first time for two cuts off this album, “Dear Life” and “Little Things.”
“I look back at the making of this album as such a special time in my life, not just as an artist and musician but as a human being. I was in such a growth spurt embracing the difficulties of life and learning to channel challenges into creativity. I love that I can still hear that process and my maturation happening on each song,” says Kreviazuk.
No stranger to the Massey Hall stage, Kreviazuk will perform at the historic venue for the first time since 2011. Toronto became home for Kreviazuk in the mid-1990s when she moved from Winnipeg to pursue her music career.
“It’s an honour to play at Massey Hall even once, and I am so happy to be returning,” says Kreviazuk. “Being a woman in the music business is a long and storied journey and to land back on such an esteemed stage has me feeling so incredibly grateful, especially in celebration of such a special album in my career. My babies have been on that stage with me; hopefully they will come back, all grown up!”
Earlier this year, Anthem Entertainment acquired a catalogue of hit songs written by Kreviazuk, beginning a brand-new partnership between one of the world’s leading independent music companies and the internationally-recognized songwriter. The catalogue includes several Kreviazuk cuts, including “In This Life,” “Time” and “Get To You” alongside certified hits and collaborations recorded by Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Drake, Avril Lavigne, Pitbull, Shakira, Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, Carrie Underwood and more.
ABOUT CHANTAL KREVIAZUK
Chantal Kreviazuk made her critically acclaimed full-length debut, “Under These Rocks and Stones,” in 1997. Since then, the Winnipeg-born and internationally celebrated 3x JUNO Award and Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and musician, classically trained pianist, actress, movie producer, philanthropist, humanitarian and proud wife and mother of three has recorded 10 albums, including a live album, a holiday album and a collaboration with her husband and Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida. A prolific songwriter, Kreviazuk has written global smashes for the likes of Drake, Gwen Stefani, Pitbull, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Carrie Underwood, Avril Lavigne, Shakira, Kelly Clarkson and Kendrick Lamar. Equally committed to helping those in need, Kreviazuk was awarded the Order of Canada in 2014 along with Maida, for their efforts to raise awareness and support for human and animal rights, mental health, education and the environment. Kreviazuk has been an ambassador to War Child for more than two decades and one of the organization’s founding artists.

Hong Kong’s most popular boy band MIRROR have taken Chinese-speaking Asia by storm and they just touched down in Toronto for the final North American stop of their sold-out FEEL THE PASSION Tour. The twelve-member group perform at Meridian Hall in Toronto this Wednesday night!
MIRROR were formed via reality series Good Night Show – King Maker in 2018 and members include Frankie Chan, Alton Wong, Lokman Yeung, Stanley Yau, Anson Kong, Jer Lau, Ian Chan, Anson Lo, Jeremy Lee, Edan Lui, Keung To and Tiger Yau. In just five years and a pandemic, they now are touring the world!
Fans camped out at Pearson International Airport waiting on their arrival, setting up banners and signs around the terminal to welcome MIRROR‘s arrival. Finally coming through just after 1:30 AM from New York City, they kept the energy alive and feverish as the band members walked through a lane way with fans standing on each side cheering them on. Only as they boarded their tour bus did things get a little unruly as they were flanked by security to get them onto the vehicle safely.
It is safe to say this was absolutely bonkers. Never seen this level of fandemonium and I’ve seen a lot!
Some highlights below. I was able to get beside the band’s lead Keung To! Glad everyone’s safe.
