About Michèle Hozer & The Cutting Factory

A distinguished filmmaker and editor, Michèle Hozer has been a staple in the Canadian film industry since 1987. With two films gracing the Oscar shortlist, an Emmy nomination, and multiple Gemini and Canadian Screen Awards, her remarkable career has been punctuated by acclaim from prestigious film festivals worldwide.

Her editing on Shake Hands with the Devil: The Journey of Roméo Dallaire contributed to the film’s 2007 Emmy Award for Best Documentary and the Audience Award at Sundance. She received an individual Emmy nomination for Promise to the Dead: The Exile Journey of Ariel Dorfman. As co-director of Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould, she was shortlisted for an Academy Award and received a Gemini Award for Best Biography. The Canadian Film Centre (CFC) and Canadian Society of Cinematographers (CSC) are pleased to announce the five participants joining the 2025 Cinematography Intensive, a comprehensive two-week training opportunity for female-identifying DOPs in collaboration with the Norman Jewison Film Program. With continued support by the Paul Bronfman Family Foundation, this groundbreaking intensive honours the late Paul Bronfman’s legacy by helping cinematographers elevate their craft, strengthen their storytelling, teamwork and technical skills, and expand their professional network. The five talented artists from across Canada arrived at the CFC for the Cinematography Intensive on August 11, 2025. See here for more information.

As part of the Intensive, the Directors of Photography (DOP) will take part in a series of workshops and mentorship sessions led by CSC cinematographers Arthur Cooper and Zoe Dirse. They will also have the opportunity to collaborate with CFC directors, producers and editors working across multiple productions, while continuing to refine their craft and develop their distinctive visual approach. Following the Intensive in the final week of August, participants and their mentors will take part in a virtual group screening to share their work and reflect on the process. The DOPs will leave the program with new skills, connections and high-quality, original material to include in their reels to enhance their portfolio of work.

Alexis Moar (Calgary, AB) is an Alberta-based cinematographer and camera operator with over a decade of experience in the film industry. She studied Film and Video Production at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and since then her work has spanned narrative, documentary, and experimental projects. Alexis continually works to grow as an artist by drawing inspiration from the people she surrounds herself with, the natural world around her, and evocative surrealist imagery. A dedicated member of the film community, she has mentored emerging female filmmakers through programs like Herland and remains committed to lifting up others in their creative journeys. Her work is driven by curiosity, discovery, and a desire to create with sensitivity and depth.

Belen Garcia (Vancouver, BC) is a Mexican cinematographer living and working in Vancouver, Canada. With a background in animation, photography, and design, she brings a unique visual sensibility to her work. In 2018, she received a full scholarship to attend the VFS Film Production Program and has since built a career in both the independent and commercial space. Belen is a hands-on DP who loves being on set, with a particular passion for lighting. She’s committed to fostering positive, safe environments on set and is a proud member of Apertura, a Mexican collective of women cinematographers. She was selected for the 2022–2023 ASC Vision Mentorship Program, where she was mentored by Oliver Bokelberg ASC, and is currently an Associate Member of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers.

Kadri Koop (Pemberton, BC) is an Estonian cinematographer, residing in Canada, constantly hopping between North America and Europe. She spent her early 20s exploring, studying, and working across Europe and Asia before landing in the U.S. on a scholarship to study documentary film at Stanford. After a stint working in the field, Kadri found her true passion in cinematography and dove headfirst into the American Film Institute, honing her skills in narrative storytelling. Since then, she’s been shooting both short and long-form narrative and documentary projects with her unique visual style that bridges naturalism with heightened realism. Her work hasn’t gone unnoticed—Kadri has been nominated for the ASC Heritage Award and the Student Emmy’s. Most recently, she snagged the 2024 Angénieux Special Encouragement Award at the Cannes Film Festival, sharing the honor with legendary Indian cinematographer Santosh Sivan ASC ISC.

Nadzeya Mikhalchenkava (Toronto, ON) is a Belarusian-born cinematographer based in Toronto whose work has been showcased at the Women Film Festival, Sunderland Film Festival, Paris Film Awards, and numerous festivals across France, England, and Canada. In 2024, she received Best Cinematography at the IBDFF for the short film Vanamaaly. Awarded a scholarship to study film in Paris, Nadzeya began developing her distinctive visual style, influenced by Tarkovsky, Bergman, and Herzog. She later earned a Master’s in Film and TV from the University of Sunderland, refining her expertise in camera operation, lighting, directing, editing, and color grading. At the conclusion of her Master’s, her thesis film—which she directed—won the Best Overall Post-Graduate Project (Film) award. A professional musician and dancer, she incorporates rhythm, movement, and musicality into her cinematography, using these sensibilities to shape pacing, framing, and camera choreography. This fusion of disciplines lends her work both visual impact and a sense of harmonic composition. Having lived and worked in Belarus, France, China, Cambodia, England, and now Canada, Nadzeya brings a multicultural perspective and a sensitivity to diverse cultural contexts, creating visually expressive, emotionally resonant imagery that connects across borders and artistic forms.

Talia Woodland (Whitehorse, Yukon / Toronto, ON) is an ex-dancer turned filmmaker currently based in Toronto. After being raised far from the film industry in Whitehorse, Yukon, she has built a busy camera career with a passion for environmental and social justice projects. Talia is passionate about supporting other women identifying and nonbinary folks to join and succeed in the field of cinematography. As a Steadicam Operators Association Certified Steadicam Operator/owner, Talia has a growing list of Steadicam/camera operating credits on a range of projects. Her years on set as an AC and operator have led her to the role of cinematographer, a new journey she is excited to take. Some of her recent cinematography work includes a climate comedy series: THE BIG OIL ALLIANCE, winner of Best Cinematography (Comedic) at New Jersey Web Fest. Talia graduated from Humber College’s Film and Television Production Advanced Diploma program, with a focus in Cinematography, and Directing/Producing. She is the recipient of Humber’s 2019 Women in Film Award/Scholarship for achievement of overall excellence in the program. Her thesis short documentary film ALL IT GIVES, has screened at 18 global film festivals and has won 3 awards.

With just three weeks until the Festival, TIFF is proud to share a preview of this year’s programming and events that go beyond the big screen, offering a broader lens on the global entertainment industry’s influence. TIFF’s iconic In Conversation With… (ICW) series is set to welcome international superstars Park Chan-wook, Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Tessa Thompson alongside Nia DaCosta, five bold, original voices who will engage audiences through candid, in-depth conversations about their careers, craft, and creative journeys. The 50th Toronto International Film Festival, presented by Rogers, runs September 4–14, 2025.

TIFF Next Wave presents an inaugural TIFF: Close-Up conversation with Project Y co-stars Han So-hee and Jun Jong-seo. Programmed specifically for TIFF’s Under-25 audience, this is an opportunity to hear from two of the most exciting global rising stars at this year’s Festival.

“As we mark TIFF’s 50th edition, our programming continues to reflect our belief that film and creative expression can spark dialogue, challenge perspectives, and build connection,” said Anita Lee, Chief Programming Officer, TIFF. “From intimate ICWs and a Close-Up event with today’s biggest stars, to events designed to elevate and celebrate creative communities, we’re proud to offer Festival goers opportunities to further engage.”

Now in its third year, TIFF’s invite-only Black Excellence Brunch presented by RBC, hosted at RBC House (Petros82), and supported by the Jamaica Tourist Board, is a vibrant celebration of the Black creative community. The event fosters connection, shared experience, and collective growth by bringing together both local and international voices. This year’s brunch will also shine a spotlight on the 30th anniversary and enduring legacy of Planet Africa, the groundbreaking Festival programme founded by Cameron Bailey in 1995.

Announced last week, the Criterion Mobile Closet is making its sixth stop and its Canadian debut as part of TIFF’s Festival Street, Sept 4–7. Open to the public, visitors are invited to explore its extensive collection of 1700 films and to make your very own Closet video. And if you miss your chance to visit, part of the collection and Criterion merchandise will be available in the TIFF Shop. More news about other Festival Street activations will be shared closer to the Festival.

His elegant, genre-defying storytelling has consistently challenged cinematic conventions while exploring themes of obsession, morality, and the human psyche. Join us for a rare opportunity to hear Park Chan-wook, in conversation with Don McKellar, about the evolution of his craft, his impactful career, and the making of No Other Choice — a film co-written with McKellar, and an essential new addition to one of the most celebrated filmographies of the 21st century.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is truly one of a kind: the professional wrestler turned movie superstar has a powerful connection with his global fan base, which includes diehard adult wrestling fans, young Maui devotees, and everyone in between. Johnson joins TIFF for an exclusive conversation about his journey from the ring to Hollywood, his work as a producer and co-owner of Seven Bucks Productions, and his creative collaboration with A24, Benny Safdie, and long-time friend and co-star Emily Blunt to bring the true story of MMA legend Mark Kerr to the big screen in The Smashing Machine.

Creator, producer, writer, actor, entrepreneur, and co-owner of one of the oldest football clubs in the world, Ryan Reynolds is a creative force in Hollywood and beyond. Recently named an Officer of the Order of Canada, Vancouver-born Reynolds is proudly Canadian with a healthy dash of global ambition. As TIFF opens the Festival with John Candy: I Like Me, Reynolds will discuss his work as a producer on the film, the influence of John Candy on his own career, and his work in front of and behind the camera at his company Maximum Effort.

Actor-producer Tessa Thompson and director-screenwriter Nia DaCosta discuss their bold new collaboration Hedda, a striking reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play Hedda Gabler. This intimate conversation will take audiences behind the scenes of one of the year’s greatly anticipated films, while delving into Thompson and DaCosta’s creative partnership and their respective careers. Join us for a revealing conversation about artistry, risk, and the power of creative collaboration.

Close-Up (클로즈업): Han So-hee and Jun Jong-seo

The World Premiere of Lee Hwan’s highly anticipated Project Y is part of #TIFF50, and TIFF Next Wave is presenting a special Close-Up (in Korean: 클로즈업) event with film co-stars Han So-hee and Jun Jong-seo. So-hee and Jong-seo will speak about their friendship, creative collaboration on Project Y, and their respective journeys in the entertainment world, with special focus on their starring roles in such K-Pop music videos as Seven by Jung Kook and Derre by Bibi.

We are thrilled to have attended Universal Music Canada‘s ROAD TRIP showcase! Canada honestly has some of the best Country Music emerging, and has for years, but this punctuates it!

ROAD TRIP is a three-date run across Toronto (August 11), Kingston (August 12) and Montreal (August 13) featuring Carter Faith, Dalton Davis, Kalsey Kulyk, and Brandon Wisham. All names on the brink of huge breakthroughs and we got to witness it first!

Hot on the heels of this past weekend’s Boots and Hearts Music Festival and ahead of LASSO Montreal, we were in awe of the talent we witnessed at Rock ‘N’ Horse. Each Artist embodied Country in their own unique way. Wisham, we learned is just starting out at age 22 but sings with the maturity of someone who has really lived. Kulyk is a seasoned veteran and just now is getting a chance to get her Music out to an even wider audience. Davis exudes showmanship and is like a new-school Willie Nelson. We are obsessed with Carter Faith – such a brilliant Songwriter and performer!
