#REVIEW: “GAIL DAUGHTRY AND THE CELEBRITY SEX PASS”

Comedian/Director/Writer David Wain has gifted us with a unique brand of absurdist, R-rated humour that includes classics like WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER and ROLE MODELS. He’s done it again with his latest, the The Wizard of Oz-inspired raunchy summer romp that is GAIL DAUGHTRY AND THE CELEBRITY SEX PASS.

This hilarious Comedy centers on hairdresser Gail (Zoey Deutch), who’s about to get married in a week.  Her co-worker Otto (Miles Gutierrez-Riley) asks her who her “celebrity hall pass” would be, to which she hasn’t a clue other than her fiancé.  After taking him to a Jennifer Aniston book signing where he has an awakening that his celebrity hall pass is Aniston, and then actually hooking-up with her too! Gail feels betrayed and wants to get even.  She and Otto head off to Hollywood for a hair convention, giving her more the reason to find her hall pass, Jon Hamm.  Along the way, she gets a bit of help from a ragtag gang including failed paparazzi Vince (Co-Writer Ken Marino), a CAA agent Caleb (Ben Wang) who might be able to connect Gail to Jon Hamm, and John Slattery – Hamm‘s Mad Men Co-star of all people, who is down for the ride!

And did we mention there’s a Crime Thriller plot twist? Mobster Ludovica (Sabrina Impacciatore) orders a hit on Gail after learning that she’s in possession of a brief case holding the key to her financial takeover, which got swapped out by mistake in Gail‘s travels to Hollywood.

While the premise and humour and completely raunchy, Wain balances this with some great storytelling that keeps us focused on Gail’s journey to herself, and also the relationships she forms with this team of men driven to help her achieve her goal. Cleverly following the character archetypes of The Wizard of Oz, GAIL DAUGHTRY AND THE CELEBRITY SEX PASS is so much craftier than its synopsis might hint. This Ensemble are perfect together, each showcasing a unique set of comedic skill sets.  The Film packs so many amazing surprises, delivering big, ridiculous laughs and shocking cameos we never saw coming!
