The latest from Patrick Hughes follows a group of US Army Rangers during the last stage of their selection. The elite team gets sent into the mountains of Colorado to complete their final training exercise. However, it turns into a fight for survival against a threat they could’ve never imagined.
War Machine begins as a standard story of war training. Soldier 81 (Alan Ritchson) goes into the Ranger program to finish the dream his recently deceased brother had. Ritchson carries this touching backstory with him through every frame. 81 proves himself to be an unstoppable force during the training exercises. During training, we learn a lot about the group of Rangers and what it takes to become one. When 81 makes it to the final round, he’s forced to be the team leader as they head to the mountains.
It’s when this final training exercise happens that War Machine delivers a sci-fi twist. This group must not only prove themselves as Rangers, but also fight an unknown threat they never could have prepared for. This twist might take some viewers off guard, especially if they weren’t expecting the storyline to progress this way. Yet, it’s this unique twist that sets War Machine apart from other war training films.
Hughes makes War Machine an unpredictable ride loaded with action-packed sequences. He’s assembled a strong cast that gives depth to their characters, making viewers become invested in their survival.
