Review by Amanda Gilmore for Mr. Will Wong
Hannibal series creator Bryan Fuller and its star Mads Mikkelsen team up again for Fuller’s feature directorial debut, Dust Bunny.
The Film follows young Aurora (Sophie Sloan), who discovers a small dust bunny under her bed. However, this isn’t your typical dust bunny that can be eliminated with a broom or vacuum. This one becomes a terrifyingly enormous monster in the blink of an eye. When the appearance of this dust bunny aligns with Aurora’s parents’ vanishing, she asks her next-door neighbour (Mikkelsen), who she knows is a hit man, to kill the monster she believes ate her entire family. The hitman thinks he might be responsible for Aurora’s missing parents. So, to protect the young girl, the two begin a journey to discover the truth about the monster.
The best way to describe Dust Bunny is to say it’s Leon: The Professional, set in a fantasy world. We hope this reads as the massive compliment it’s intended to be. Fuller’s got the young girl who teams-up with a hitman, only this time it’s to find her parents. The monsters, the murder, and the sinister world Aurora gets sucked into are set in this child-like fairytale world. Thus, allowing the juxtaposition of Aurora’s childhood innocence amongst the dark themes. Additionally, if you enjoy Fuller’s niche mix of horror and comedy, they are fully utilized here.
At its core, Dust Bunny is about monsters: real or imagined. Whether it’s the monster under our bed or the person down the hall. What are they? Are they as bad as we think? Most importantly, these monsters can be anywhere. This theme is told with whimsical horror through the eyes of a child. At such a young age, Sloan delivers a performance that feels as though it’s from a seasoned actor, much like the performance from her seasoned acting partner, Mikkelsen. It’s great to have him join Fuller on his first feature outing. He understands Fuller’s thematic and tonal vision. It’s a film that is rich in idiosyncrasies, and the filmmaking team come together to make it an entertaining, fantastical journey.
Overall, Dust Bunny is a unique and fun Action-Horror that boasts strong performances from Sloan and Mikkelsen and solidifies promising features to come from Fuller.
Cineplex Pictures release DUST BUNNY on Friday, December 12, 2025.
