Review by Justin Waldman for Mr. Will Wong
From Director Timo Tjahjanto and Screenwriters Derek Kolstad (who wrote the first installment) and Aaron Rabin, comes a family vacation from hell in Nobody 2. The only people suffering are the ones who refuse to let our Mister Nobody finally relax, unwind, and go to the happiest place on earth – his former childhood vacation spot. Interrupt this man’s vacation with his family and the consequences may in fact be deadly!
The Movie focuses on Hutch (Bob Odenkirk) and his wife Becca (Connie Nielson) as they’re hitting a rough patch in their relationship as Hutch’s job has gotten in the way of him being a good husband and father to his children, Sammy and Brady (Paisley Cadorath and Gage Munroe respectfully), so he decides to do the only thing he can do, and that is plan a family vacation where he takes a break from work and he tells The Barber (Colin Salmon) this who is shockingly okay with this decision, despite him knowing Hutch is practically incapable of disconnecting. Everything is going relatively fine, until the family goes to an arcade and Brady picks a fight with Max (Lucius Hoyos) and one of the arcade attendants decides to smack Sammy and that sets off Hutch and ends up creating a whole new world of trouble.
The new world of trouble stems from Wyatt (John Ortiz), who is running the town and takes orders from Lendina (Sharon Stone) as well as is the boss of and gives orders to Sheriff Abel (Colin Hanks), however when things go haywire, and Hutch gets in the way of Ledina’s operations everything comes to a crushing halt and his vacation is seemingly over. Ensuring his families safety with his father, David (Christopher Lloyd) Hutch goes down to ensure his families safety with some unlikely allies and finally get the well deserved respite he deserves.
The Movie, even though it didn’t seem plausible to make a sequel to Nobody, works incredibly well thanks to the direction from Tjahjanto who creates a world of explosive chaos for the Movie to rein-in with both Derek Kolstad and Aaron Rabin, the former of which wrote the first Movie, bringing signature disorder and adventure to the forefront. This creates an action-packed ride for the audience to get lost in, with a story that actually makes sense. While we’ve seen sequels that don’t really need to exist that have worked (John Wick franchise – they work, like this works) it was unexpected, but due to the balancing act of the Sreenplay, Nobody 2 is a homerun and the vacation audience members are craving.
We already knew that Odenkirk was the man thanks to Nobody and he can kick ass and take names like nobody’s business, and Connie Nielson, Paisley Cadorath and Gage Monroe all reprise their roles as well so its clear this core family has chemistry and works together. It is the inclusion of the likes of Lucius Hoyos, John Ortiz, Colin Hanks, and Sharon Stone being the new additions that bring a new level of flare and pizazz to the anarchy that unfolds in this underbelly world that Hutch finds himself entrenched in. While the running time is roughly 90 minutes, this second entry flies by and never takes its foot off the gas pedal as it continues to soar past expectations and realities and creates a dynamic of action at a magnitude that screams Summer Blockbuster.
Universal Pictures Canada releases NOBODY 2 in theaters on Friday, August 15, 2025.
