Last night we had the remarkable opportunity to catch the Olivier Award Winning Best Musical, and Tony Award winning Operation Mincemeat, brought to us by Mirvish at the Royal Alexandra Theatre.
Operation Mincemeat has its book, music, and lyrics written by David Cumming, Felix Hagan, Natasha Hodgson, and Zoe Roberts (who all also originated the roles). The brief synopsis on the Mirvish website truly describes it best, “how did a dead body, a fake love letter, and – of all people – Ian Fleming turn the tide of WWII?” that is the question that is answered and addressed in this historical piece of theatre discussing how the British stopped Hitler from seizing Italy and eventually winning the war. It is at times hilarious, at times terrifying, and at times eye opening in a foot stomping musical about the unlikeliest of heroes in MI5, and of course the famed Ian Flemming devising a plan that ultimately stopped Hitler from winning the war.
The cast consists of Mariah Copeland, Katie Kleiger, Luke Antony Neville, Erin Ramirez, and Jake Bentley Young as they all play multiple roles throughout the show, creating different characters and triumphs for them to overcome. While everyone performs excellently, and usually gets at least one moment in the spotlight it was Luke Antony Neville who was featured in Back to the Future Musical both on Broadway and the first national tour, and in Titanique on off-broadway, stole the show with his powerhouse voice, cadence and presence throughout the show.
Make sure you get your tickets quickly, despite the fact this had multiple extensions on Broadway, there is no guarantee Mirvish is able to follow suit and the run is set to end December 13t, 2026. Be sure to catch Operation Mincemeat and discover the unlikely way that the war was won before its too late.
