#FIRSTLOOK: “MARIE ANTOINETTE” 4K RESTORATION FROM MUBI CANADA

MUBI, the global distributor, streaming service and production company, is pleased to announce the Canadian theatrical date for the 20th Anniversary 4K Restoration of Sofia Coppola’s Academy Award-winning film Marie Antoinette, originally released by Sony Pictures and starring Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman, along with the theatrical and streaming release dates for Making Marie Antoinette, an intimate feature-length documentary offering a behind-the-scenes look at the 2006 feature film. Shot by her mother, acclaimed filmmaker Eleanor Coppola, the documentary is produced by Lorenzo Mieli, Mario Gianani, Rachel Dengiz, Youree Henley and Sofia Coppola. The documentary was financed by OUR FILMS (a Mediawan company), Mediawan Rights, and Entourage Pictures with the support of CHANEL.

From Academy Award®-winning screenwriter and Oscar® nominated director Sofia Coppola, comes a youthful and contemporary 21st century movie about an 18th century legend — MARIE ANTOINETTE.

Often maligned, passionately debated and ultimately a misunderstood young woman, Marie Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst), through Coppola’s vision, emerges neither as staid historical villain nor divine idol — but as a confused and lonely teenage outsider thrust against her will into a decadent and scandal-plagued world on the eve of disaster.

Marie Antoinette was restored in 4K by Sony Pictures Entertainment in collaboration with American Zoetrope. Restored from the 35mm Original Picture Negative, scanned in 4K by Prasad Corp., Burbank. Audio preparation and conform by Sony Sound, Culver City from the original 5.1 track sources. Color grading by Roundabout, Burbank with colorist Gregg Garvin. Color approval by Cinematographer Lance Acord and Sofia Coppola. Restoration supervised by Rita Belda for SPE and James Mockoski for American Zoetrope.

Marie Antoinette will be in Canadian theatres on October 23rd.

MAKING MARIE ANTOINETTE
In 2005, Sofia Coppola made her third feature film, Marie Antoinette, starring Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman, at the Palace of Versailles, the first production ever to have been granted permission. Her mother, acclaimed documentarian Eleanor Coppola, accompanied her on set and shot about eighty hours of footage, focusing on her daughter’s journey of making the film. This year, to mark the 20th anniversary of the release of Marie Antoinette, and to fulfil her mother’s wishes, Coppola edited the unseen footage. Making Marie Antoinette shows the craftsmanship that went into the film, legendary costume designer Milena Canonero at work and what it was like to be a young female director at that time. The result is a fascinating look at the process of making this landmark film, and an unexpectedly intimate family portrait.

The footage was edited by Aaron Matthews with input from Eleanor’s good friends Davia Nelson and Liz Bird. In the film, Eleanor Coppola is voiced by Academy Award® nominee Diane Lane, who reads passages from Eleanor’s journals in which she discusses her experiences on set and reflects on her relationship with her daughter.

Sofia Coppola said: “My mother and I started going through her footage during lockdown. It was always her wish to make what she shot into a feature length documentary. She was on set as a filmmaker and also my mother, so I found it so moving to go back through the material and to see our shoot through her eyes.”

Making Marie Antoinette will be in theatres October 23rd and available exclusively on MUBI globally from November 6.
