Move over Netflix and Chill; this holiday season, Canadians are all about Netflix and Hibernate. Forget last-minute shopping and chaotic family dinners (yes, even with the in-laws). This year, Canadians are redefining holiday traditions and trading the usual stress for something way cozier.
According to our latest poll, Canadians are getting really serious about their entertainment. A holiday hibernation trend is sweeping the country, with nearly half of Canadians with Netflix (45%) admitting they want to spend the holiday time during December indulging in their favourite shows, films and festive treats, particularly among young adults who are leading the movement.
But wait, there’s more: half of Canadians (50%) confess to sneaking away from family gatherings to catch up on Netflix during the holidays. No judgement – we totally get it.
Not all Canadians are on the same page when it comes to their holiday priorities: Young adults aged 18 to 29 are the most likely to steal away for streaming breaks, with 10% slipping off every few hours for their must-watch series and movies. Whereas Canadians aged 60 and over are holding the firmest to tradition, with 73% preferring time with family over making a dent in their watchlist.
Multitasking has also become a trademark of the holiday season. Nearly a quarter of Canadians (24%) watch Netflix while wrapping gifts, turning chores into festive moments of entertainment.
Canadians also know what they want, with 35% of Canadians re-watching the same beloved films and specials every year, and 43% saying these classic favourites are their top choice for holiday viewing.
With the highly anticipated final installments of Stranger Things arriving this holiday season, excitement is building, with 56% of Canadians planning to watch every new episode as they’re released in November and December.
Make sure to catch the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, debuting in three volumes: the first four episodes are out now, three episodes will release on December 25, and the finale episode will land on New Year’s Eve. Each volume releases at 8 PM ET.
So grab your coziest blanket, stock up on your favourite holiday snacks and join the great Canadian holiday hibernation! More here on the studies.
Join fans across the US and Canada to watch and celebrate the series’ finale in theatres on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. More information on how to attend these fan events, as well as specific theatre locations, will be made available later this year.

Counting down to the final chapter, the cast, creators, and executive producers of ‘Stranger Things’ set the stage for what’s to come and where we find our characters at the start of the season, as told to Tudum:
“Eleven is in training mode. She’s in a warrior state, which is the first time you see Eleven like that at the beginning of a season. As for her mindset, all she is thinking about is protecting her friends. Her friends are her chosen family, so she will do whatever it takes to protect them and we’re going to see that.”
“Dustin is kind of in a bit of a funk. I think everybody probably is considering the state that Hawkins is in, and it’s getting a little bit harder for the gang to keep all the pieces together. We’re all dealing with the day-to-day issues of what it is to try to keep everybody safe and figure out where Vecna is, while having a lot of unpacked baggage from the events in the previous season.”
“It’s always been in the beginning of a season that everything is all good, but this is the first season we come into it and the stakes are the same as where we left off. We haven’t defeated Vecna and the problem is still there. We’re still trying to figure it out and we may not be able to figure it out, so you feel that burden on Lucas as well as everyone else on the show. Everyone is on edge and we’re all just trying to keep hope alive.”
“Will is back in Hawkins this season. He was out of Hawkins for the last season, so now we’re seeing the effects of him being back in that realm. We kind of hit the ground running right away this season, which is really exciting and not how we’ve started any other season. Everyone is all in one place and we all have the same objective.”
“We ended Season 4 in a tough place for Max. Her final moments were her in a hospital bed. Eleven was searching for her in the void and couldn’t find her, so Max is definitely not the way she once was. There’s still a small glimmer of hope, though, and her friends are hanging on to that.”
“Mike is back in leadership mode, and he’s kind of taken it more upon himself to help plan out these missions, and he and the whole gang are devoted to finding Vecna and ending this.”
“I think what’s unique about this season is that it starts a little bit in chaos because our heroes ultimately lost at the end of Season 4. We usually set up their normal life and how they’re going about school, and then we introduce the supernatural element. But in this case, this season is sprinting from the start.”
“The action is next level, the visual effects are next level, but I’m also happy to say that the emotional center remains the same. And part of the magic of this show is that even as we evolve, even as the storytelling becomes more epic, it’s always anchored in these characters that we love.”

A love letter to the ‘80s classic genre films that captivated a generation, Stranger Things is a thrilling drama set in the seemingly normal Midwestern town of Hawkins, Indiana. After a boy vanishes into thin air, his close-knit group of friends and family search for answers and are pulled into a high-stakes and deadly series of events. Beneath the surface of their ordinary town lurks an extraordinary supernatural mystery, along with top-secret government experiments and a dangerous gateway that connects our world to a powerful yet sinister realm. Friendships will be tested and lives will be altered as what they discover will change Hawkins and possibly the world — forever.
Created by The Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things debuted in 2016 and quickly became one of Netflix’s most popular television series ever, with its fourth season alone amassing over 140.7M views globally. Rooted in ‘80s nostalgia, it boosted Kate Bush’s track “Running Up That Hill” into the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first time in its 38-year history. The series has also garnered over 70 awards worldwide including Emmys® and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, and has been nominated for over 230 awards. The highly anticipated fifth and final season will release later this year in three volumes at 5PM PT: four episodes on November 26, three episodes on Christmas and the finale on New Year’s Eve. The beloved franchise offers fans various ways to engage with the cultural phenomenon year-round, including: the Olivier and Tony-award winning stage play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow; a collection of books takes fans deeper into the story; the touring Stranger Things: The Experience which recently expanded to Brazil and Australia; Stranger Things: Escape the Dark; a brand new immersive experience set to open at Netflix House later this year; Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85, an animated series that will take fans back to Hawkins; fans celebrate November 6 — the day Will Byers went missing — as ‘Stranger Things Day;’ and they can follow @StrangerThings.Things for fun ways to bring the world into their everyday lives.
