MUBI, the global film distributor, streaming service and production company, brings Gianfranco Rosi’s Pompei: Below the Clouds exclusively to MUBI in Canada on March 27, 2026. The film received its world premiere at the 82nd Venice International FiIm Festival, winning the Special Jury Prize, and also screened as part of both the New York Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival in 2025.

Between Mount Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples, the ground shakes periodically and the fumaroles of the Phlegraean Fields taint the air. From the traces of history, memories of the subterranean world, and the concerns of the present, in black and white, a lesser-known Naples emerges and fills with voices, with lives.

From award-winning filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi comes Pompei: Below the Clouds, a striking and human portrait of Naples, a city forever marked by the looming presence of Mount Vesuvius. While the volcano’s quiet threat lingers in the background, Rosi turns his lens toward the everyday rhythms of life that continue undisturbed. Archaeologists carefully brush away centuries of dust to reveal fragments of history, children recite lessons as the earth hums beneath their feet, and firefighters stand ready for the next call.

Through these intimate moments and sweeping imagery, the film reveals a community that has learned to live with uncertainty. The result is a portrait at once local and universal: a reflection on humanity’s capacity to live, love, and rebuild in the shadow of the unimaginable.

As with his earlier films (Fire at Sea, Notturno), Gianfranco Rosi’s latest is a masterful act of cinematic immersion. Shot in and around Naples over the course of three years as Rosi embedded himself in the communities in and around Vesuvius, Pompei: Below the Clouds marks his first black-and-white feature in over thirty years. In 2013, his film Sacro GRA was the first ever documentary to be awarded the Golden Lion.
