Cameron Bailey, CEO, TIFF, is delighted to announce the first honourees of this year’s Tribute Awards: Academy Award®–winning directors and legends Pedro Almodóvar and Spike Lee. One of the world’s foremost filmmakers and provocative storytellers, Almodóvar will receive the Jeff Skoll Award in Impact Media presented by Participant, and Lee, a cultural icon who has influenced generations of filmmakers, will receive the TIFF Ebert Director Award. The 2023 Tribute Awards presented by Bulgari will take place on Sunday, September 10, 2023 during the 48th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival at Fairmont Royal York Hotel. Now in its fifth year, the TIFF Tribute Awards have served as an awards-season bellwether, with past honourees Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Fraser, Jessica Chastain, Roger Deakins, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Joaquin Phoenix, Taika Waititi, and Chloé Zhao going on to win awards on the international stage.
“It’s a true thrill to acknowledge Pedro Almodóvar as the distinguished recipient of the Jeff Skoll Impact Media Award for 2023,” stated Bailey. “Pedro has been coming to TIFF for years, and each time is better than the time before. His artistic vision, bold storytelling, and unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of cinema have had a profound impact. He challenges societal norms, champions diversity, and illuminates the human experience with sensitivity and grace. We applaud his contributions to cinema and celebrate his ability to inspire and provoke audiences worldwide.”
The Jeff Skoll Award in Impact Media presented by Participant recognizes leadership in creating a union between social impact and cinema. Past recipients honoured in the prestigious category include Buffy Sainte-Marie in 2022, Alanis Obomsawin in 2021, and Mira Nair in 2020.
“The TIFF Ebert Director Award recognizes filmmakers who have exemplified greatness in their career,” continued Bailey. “A foremost storyteller of our era, Spike’s body of work from She’s Gotta Have It, to Do the Right Thing, to Mo’ Better Blues, to his most recent film at TIFF 2020, American Utopia, Spike has inspired audiences and made a lasting impact on the art of filmmaking.”
Named after legendary film critic Roger Ebert, the Award has gone to celebrated visionaries such as Martin Scorsese, Claire Denis, Ava DuVernay, Wim Wenders, and the late Agnès Varda. Past recipients who received the Award since the TIFF Tribute Awards were introduced include Sam Mendes (2022), Denis Villeneuve (2021), Chloé Zhao (2020), and Taika Waititi (2019).
Bulgari returns as a major sponsor and official jewellery partner of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, also presenting the Share Her Journey Groundbreaker Award at the 2023 Tribute Awards. The partnership between TIFF and Bulgari highlights a shared commitment to arts and culture.
The Awards night serves as TIFF’s largest annual fundraiser, having raised $1.3 million in 2022. This year, the Tribute Awards gala will support the Viola Desmond Cinema campaign, which was launched through the Every Story Fund in 2022. For more information visit tiff.net/tribute.
Pedro Almodóvar Biography
Pedro Almodóvar was born in Calzada de Calatrava, Spain and left for Madrid at 17 to study cinema and direct film, but it became impossible when the National School of Cinema (in Madrid) was closed by the Franco government. As a result, Almdóvar was [mostly] self-taught, making a number of short films from 1974–1978. His first feature film, Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls on the Heap, debuted in 1980. He launched his production company El Deseo with his brother Agustín in 1986, and has since produced, written, and directed his own and other directors’ films. Some of his films have been adapted into plays (All About My Mother) and even into musicals (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown). The Oscar-winning filmmaker has received numerous accolades over his five-decade career, including one of Spain’s top prizes for outstanding achievement, the Prince of Asturias Award (2006), and honourary degrees from Harvard University (2009) and Oxford University (2016).
Spike Lee Biography
Spike Lee is a graduate of Morehouse College, Class of 1979, with a B.A. in Mass Communications. He also is a Graduate of the Numero Uno, NYU Graduate Film School, and a classmate of Ernest Dickerson and Ang Lee 1982. He is also a tenured Film Professor and Artistic Director at NYU Graduate Film School.
The Toronto International Film Festival® is thrilled to announce the 2023 selections for the Discovery and Midnight Madness programmes. The infamous Midnight Madness lineup features 10 titles, 7 of which are World Premieres. The Discovery lineup, which primarily boasts World and International Premieres, includes 26 titles. Notably, 13 female filmmakers representing 50% of the total programme are featured in this year’s Discovery programme.
Midnight Madness and Discovery provide a cornucopia of original and unexpected work. Midnight Madness is a fan favourite, iconoclastic programme highlighting the weird and the wicked, while the Discovery programme offers a window to contemporary international cinema and introduces the public to first and second feature films from gifted new filmmakers.
“We’re excited to be showcasing new voices, audacious vision, and genre-bending cinema,” said Anita Lee, TIFF Chief Programming Officer. “TIFF’s Discovery and Midnight Madness programmes for 2023 will once again prove to be the ultimate destination for tastemakers and experience seekers.”
MIDNIGHT MADNESS PROGRAMME 2023
“Sides will be split — both figuratively and literally (on screen) — as Midnight Madness returns to the Royal Alexandra Theatre with another stimulating concoction of unpredictable shock and ‘y’arr!’ cinema,” said Peter Kuplowsky, TIFF International Programmer, Midnight Madness. “Featuring two timely satiric provocations from Saudi Arabia (NAGA) and Serbia (Working Class Goes to Hell) — nations that are making their section debut — this year’s madness infectiously ignites with 11 o’clock numbers that go all the way to midnight courtesy of Larry Charles’ bonkers and bawdy Dicks: The Musical. A menagerie of tastes will be sated, so bottoms up!”

Paramount+ today unveiled the official trailer for the new feature-length documentary REINVENTING ELVIS: THE ’68 COMEBACK. The documentary will premiere exclusively on the service Tuesday, August 15, 2023 in the U.S. and Canada and internationally on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 in the U.K., Latin America, Brazil, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy.
Premiering days before the anniversary of Presley’s death, REINVENTING ELVIS: THE ’68 COMEBACK reveals what really happened behind the scenes of this mesmerizing hour of television. When it aired on the night of Dec. 3, 1968, the special became the most-watched television event of the year, and nearly half of the entire TV-watching audience tuned in to see Elvis Presley, clad in an iconic black leather suit, deliver some of the greatest performances of his life, reinvigorating his career and changing the pop-culture landscape forever.
Told from the unique perspective of Emmy® Award-winning television director Steve Binder, REINVENTING ELVIS: THE ’68 COMEBACK features interviews with Elvis experts and recollections from those who attended the special in-person, as well as all-new versions of iconic Elvis hits interpreted by contemporary musicians, including superstar Darius Rucker, Latin GRAMMY® winner Maffio and America’s Got Talent finalist Drake Milligan, who previously starred in CMT’s hit series Sun Records, also streaming on Paramount+.
REINVENTING ELVIS: THE ’68 COMEBACK is produced by Spencer Proffer’s Meteor 17 (The Day The Music Died: The Story of Don McLean’s ‘American Pie’). Steve Binder and Bruce Gillmer are executive producers.
Today, Prime Video announced that the first scene from Season Two of The Wheel of Time is now available to view at the end of the Season One finale episode (Episode 108) as a special surprise bonus for fans.
This sneak peek of the new season reflects the structure of the best-selling and epic The Wheel of Time book series by Robert Jordan, on which the Amazon Original series is based, where at the end of each novel, Jordan would add the first chapter of the next book as a preview.
In an additional homage to the show’s inspiration, the scene which has been made available—the opening from Episode 201—is an adaptation of the fan favorite “Darkfriend Social” prologue of the second novel of Jordan’s series, The Great Hunt, upon which Season Two is largely based.
Ahead of the sneak peek of the new season, here are five things to remember about the Wheel of Time Season one.
Season Two of The Wheel of Time is also based on some elements of Jordan’s third novel, The Dragon Reborn, and will premiere exclusively on Prime Video on September 1 in more than 240 countries and territories around the world. The series was filmed in the Czech Republic, Morocco, and Italy, and stars Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl, I Care a Lot) as Moiraine Damodred, Daniel Henney (Criminal Minds) as Lan Mandragoran, Josha Stradowski (Gran Turismo) as Rand al’Thor, Zoë Robins (Power Rangers Ninja Steel) as Nynaeve al’Meara, Madeleine Madden (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Egwene al’Vere, Marcus Rutherford (Obey) as Perrin Aybara, Dónal Finn (Rogue Heroes) as Mat Cauthon, and Ceara Coveney (Young Wallander) as Elayne Trakand. The Wheel of Time is a co-production with Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television.
About The Wheel of Time
Based on the best-selling Robert Jordan fantasy series The Wheel of Time, Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski, Gran Turismo) learns he is The Dragon Reborn—a dangerous figure from history destined to save the world … or break it. Desperate to protect him from the Dark One, an army of powerful women must reckon with his burgeoning power and encroaching madness. The Wheel of Time turns, and the Last Battle approaches. Though Rand thought he destroyed the Dark One, evil is not gone from the world. In Season Two, threats new and very old seek out the young friends from the Two Rivers, now scattered over the world. The woman who found and guided them is now powerless to help, and so they must find other sources of strength. In each other, or themselves. In the Light … or the Dark.
The Wheel of Time was adapted for television by executive producer and showrunner Rafe Judkins (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Hemlock Grove). Larry Mondragon and Rick Selvage of iwot productions (Winter Dragon), Ted Field of Radar Pictures (Jumanji: The Next Level, Winter Dragon), Mike Weber (Jumanji: The Next Level, Beirut), Darren Lemke (Shazam!, Goosebumps, Winter Dragon), Marigo Kehoe (Outlander, The Crown), Justine Juel Gillmer (The Survivor, Halo), Sanaa Hamri (Empire, Lovestruck), and Amanda Kate Shuman (The Blacklist) also serve as executive producers. Rosamund Pike also serves as co-executive producer, and Harriet McDougal, Brandon Sanderson, and Lauren Selig are consulting producers. The Wheel of Time is co-produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television.
A new film festival will launch in Prince Edward County this September bringing a fresh perspective on the movies we love. The County Film Festival puts screenwriters in the spotlight, and features exclusively adapted content. Whether adapted from a book, a podcast, a painting or a song, The County Film Festival is passionate about the art of adaptation and bringing together writers and audiences.
The County Film Festival is a project of Picton’s Regent Theatre, which is owned and operated by the not-for-profit and registered charity, The Regent Theatre Foundation. The Festival builds on the success of the Regent’s curated Special Screenings which, since re-opening post-pandemic in August 2021, have generated more attendance in single screenings than traditional theatrical runs of films such as AIR and TÁR.
By focusing on adapted content, the Festival has both a niche and a long programming runway that extends from gala screenings to curated conversations, to concerts, master classes, meals and more. But one thing at a time. First, on September 29, 2023 at 7PM ET the Regent Theatre will host the first-ever event of The County Film Festival – programming to be announced later in August.
According to The Regent Theatre’s Executive Director, Alexandra Seay, “Our audience is hungry for engagement, for something more than the story on screen – hearing a filmmaker’s perspective, discussing the film in a meaningful way – having the opportunity to ask questions in an intimate setting makes coming to the movies a unique and memorable experience. Creating a festival is a natural extension of this experience and is particularly important in the current climate of shrinking exhibition windows and changing viewership habits. It is critical for us as an independently owned and operated cinema in a rural community to continue to find ways of growing our audience, and keeping the magic of cinema alive for the next generation.”
“Alexandra Seay has managed to create a festival experience without a festival via her smartly curated presentations at Picton’s Regent Theatre,” says filmmaker and film critic Brian D. Johnson. “She didn’t just invite me to do a Q&A after showing my film THE COLOUR OF INK, she invited a gifted local filmmaker, Tess Girard, to moderate the discussion. What unfolded was a deep-dive conversation that went far beyond the usual parameters of a Q&A. That’s the kind of experience I associate with a serious film festival, not a one-off screening in a small town.”
“The County Film Festival builds on this experience by curating conversations between peer artists around the process of adaptation for the screen”, adds John Galway, filmmaker and Festival Producer. “Imagine: Katzuo Ishiguro in conversation with Michael Ondaatje, or Margaret Atwood in conversation with Sarah Polley on the art of adaptation. Who wouldn’t want to be a fly on the wall for a discussion between artists of this calibre?”
“The County Film Festival is right at home in alluring Prince Edward County,” says Eleanor Cook, Executive Director @visitthecounty. “This creative place sets the stage for a memorable weekend enhanced by the backdrop of ripe vineyards in September, chefs’ harvest menus, heritage architecture, bespoke places to stay, punctuated by vivid island sunsets.”
The Festival’s growing independent advisory committee comprised of industry leaders with connections to the County includes Michèle Maheux, John Galway, Hussain Amarshi, Devyani Saltzman, Tim Smythe-Bishop, and Sol Korngold. From among their ranks John Galway, long-time CEO of the Harold Greenburg Fund and Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Toronto Irish Film Festival will take the lead as Festival Producer working alongside the Regent Theatre’s Executive Director and the Festival Artistic Director, Alexandra Seay.
Over the next year, The Regent Theatre will build the Festival staff, infrastructure and a network of community partners beginning with the Royal Hotel, in order to produce the inaugural Festival in the fall of 2024. The full Festival will launch in 2024 as a three-day event to be held annually on the last weekend of September.
“Here at the Royal we believe in supporting our community,” stated Sol Korngold, General Manager of The Royal Hotel in Picton. “We are incredibly excited to be partnering with our neighbours at the Regent Theatre to build this Festival from the ground up as a signature Prince Edward County event.”
The news of the upcoming film Festival will be celebrated alongside an announcement from Ontario’s Energy Minister Todd Smith on August 2 at The Regent Theatre (224 Picton Main Street) at 1:30PM ET. To RSVP, please contact angie@route504pr.com.
What’s in a name? Everything!
That’s why we don’t have one yet. It needs to be perfect. And we need your help to find it. “Devour! The Food Film Festival” is a great example of a name that perfectly reflects their programming. So what’s the perfect name for a festival that is about adaptations beyond books? Have your say. https://forms.gle/duEjFbayyeztuva8A
About The County Film Festival:
A film festival completely dedicated to the art of adaptation. The raison d’etre (conceived long before the WGA strike but now quite timely) is to put screenwriters in the spotlight and in conversation with each other. The focus is on adaptations broadly – yes, about books … but we’re thinking bigger. Just imagine – paintings, podcasts, plays and other films. Located two hours outside of Toronto in Prince Edward County – with a beautiful heritage cinema, gourmet food, award-winning wines and the support of a luxury hotel, the Festival promises a top-tier and inspiring experience for our invited guests.
TIFF today unveiled the 10 World Premiere features that comprise the Platform programme for 2023, along with the 2023 Platform jury members: Academy Award–winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins, joined by Cannes Jury Prize–winning director, writer, and actor Nadine Labaki, and 2022 Platform Prize–winning filmmaker Anthony Shim.
Since its introduction in 2015, Platform has celebrated and showcased films with unique directorial perspectives. The 10 films in the 2023 programme are eligible for the Platform Prize, an award of $20,000 CAD given to the best film in the programme, selected by an in-person international jury.
“I am delighted to announce that we have an international dream jury with acclaimed filmmakers Barry Jenkins, Nadine Labaki, and Anthony Shim as jury members for the Platform programme at TIFF,” said Anita Lee, Chief Programming Officer, TIFF. “Together, they represent the bold and independent spirit of the Platform Prize.”
Platform is TIFF’s competitive programme that champions bold directorial visions. The films selected for this year’s programme hail from 12 countries across three continents, all of which will be making their World Premiere at TIFF.
“We are thrilled to present this year’s extraordinary films in the Platform programme, and especially delighted to present Kristoffer Borgli’s latest film Dream Scenario, starring Nicolas Cage, as Platform’s opening film. This surrealist satire-comedy has sharp, timely observations about social media culture — especially ‘going viral’ — and its impact on the way that we interact with others in our day-to-day life. Cage delivers some of his finest work,” said Robyn Citizen, Director, Programming & Platform Lead. “This year’s diverse selection is distinguished by bold character studies and classic stories told through dynamic narrative and genre approaches. Audiences will witness the emergence of thematic threads like social exile and reconnection, woven in unexpectedly thrilling ways by an array of captivating local and international voices.”
Notable previous Platform selections include 2022 winner Riceboy Sleeps from Canadian director Anthony Shim, Hany Abu-Assad’s Huda’s Salon (2021), Kamila Andini’s Yuni (2021), Darius Marder’s Sound of Metal (2019), Alice Winocour’s Proxima (2019), Kazik Radwanski’s Anne at 13,000 Ft. (2019), Sarah Gavron’s Rocks (2019), Armando Iannucci’s The Death of Stalin (2017), Pablo Larraín’s Jackie (2016), Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight (2016), William Oldroyd’s Lady Macbeth (2016), and Ben Wheatley’s High-Rise (2015).
