Review by Amanda Gilmore for Mr. Will Wong
After the Vatican gets word that a nun has committed suicide at an abbey in Romania they want to know if that land is still holy. They enlist a priest, Father Burke (Demian Bichir), that has a haunted past and a noviciate, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga), who often has visions and has yet to take her vows to become a nun to the abbey to investigate. When they arrive they immediately know the land is no long holy, however, what they find there risks their life and souls when they come face to face with a demonic nun (Bonnie Aarons).
The Nun is based off of one of the most mysterious characters that came out of The Conjuring 2. Fans of these Films have been waiting a long time to find out the story of The Nun and for her to have her own spotlight on the big screen. Thankfully Director Corin Hardy knows to capture audiences attention there needs to be fear laced throughout and a shorter running time. For those eagerly waiting fans they will be met with multiple and consistent jump scares and suspenseful moments. However, for fans who want to know the origin story of The Nun, they won’t be finding it here. Instead, this Film takes audiences to a particular time in 1951 where The Nun wrecked havoc.
When it comes to horror films everything could fall apart is the cast isn’t believable. Thankfully, the Ensemble Cast knows the horror genre well and the humour that encompasses them. Taissa Farmiga and Demian Bichir have great chemistry and make even the most unbelievable moments realistic, which is a feat when it comes to spiritual horror films that are based on true events. Yet, it is Jonas Bloquet, who plays Frenchie, a French-Canadian who finds the body of hanging nun, who steals the show. Fans of the Horror genre love it when there are comedic moments that give nostalgia to those that came before, and that’s what Bloquet does. He’s the comic relief and the character who will be remember after the credits roll.
The Nun is a good mix of scares and humour throughout.
Warner Bros. Canada will release THE NUN on Friday, September 7, 2018.
