Review by Amanda Gilmore for Mr. Will Wong
It’s always a fun time with The Smurfs and this time some girl Smurfs get in on the action.
Smurfs 3: The Lost Village follows Smurfette (Demi Lovato) and her quest in finding who she is. When she gets captured by the evil wizard Gargamel (Rainn Wilson) she accidentally give him information on a lost village of Smurfs in the forbidden forest. In order to right her wrong, herself, Clumsy (Jack McBrayer), Brainy (Danny Pudi) and Hefty (Joe Manganiello) go on a journey to find this lost village and warn the mysterious Smurf village of the danger that is heading their way.
There is never a dull moment in Smurfs 3: The Lost Village. But, it is when the four best friend Smurfs make their journey into the forbidden forest that the Film is at its best. The visuals are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. There are a bunch of bright colours and energetic action that causes an automatic giddy feeling. It isn’t only the visuals that work in this third installment of the Smurfs, but the story is the guiding force.
It’s not often enough that a Film geared to a younger audience has an endearing storyline. Yet, that is precisely what Smurfs 3: The Lost Village has. The boy smurfs in Smurfette’s village have a purpose. Clumsy is actually clumsy and Brainy is actually brainy. She tries being good at what each smurf is good at, but fails. It is in her quest to find the lost village that she finds who she’s supposed to be. And that is who ever she wants to be. The Film also brings in more female characters throughout the course of the running time, which is something that’s new to the Smurf universe and refreshing to the audience.
Overall, Smurfs 3: The Lost Village will take the audience on a fun and enthusiastic journey. People of all ages will be pleased with the latest addition to the Smurfs franchise. Not only because it’s a good time at the movies, but because it’s a story of being whoever you want to be.
Sony Pictures Canada will release SMURFS 3: THE LOST VILLAGE on Friday April 7, 2017.
