Review by Amanda Gilmore for Mr. Will Wong
American Assassin is a high-energy Action Film.
The Film follows Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien) who is on a mission to kill the man in charge of the terrorist attack that left his finance murdered. The CIA see him as an asset to their newest mission in catching down a new terrorist planning on targeting Europe and the United States. After a gruelling training program he and Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton) go out to catch the terrorist before he hashes out his plan.
The first scene of American Assassin creates a strong storyline and great character development for its lead, Mitch. There is also a strong connection to the heartbreaking reality of our world today. Yet, that storyline doesn’t become the main story. They leave it and a new storyline surrounding terrorism forms. The problem is that this storyline isn’t as strong as the one in the beginning and it isn’t developed enough to become believable. There then becomes multiple plots formed in this one Film resulting in underdeveloped stories and plot holes.
O’Brien carries this action-packed Film from beginning to end. Mitch is the most developed character and O’Brien gives him the extra push to become a three-dimensional character. He has the ability to makes this action-star character into a carrying and kind human. As always Keaton is exciting to watch. He’s at his best in the training scenes and when he is confronting and being tortured by the terrorist he is trying to catch. Together they are entertaining to watch with their back and forth banter. These are two different kind of actors coming together and working great together.
Overall, American Assassin is a great Action Movie that is full of energy from beginning to end. It shines great performances from O’Brien and Keaton. Yet, there seems to be multiple story lines and characters that aren’t fully developed to be interesting enough to the audience.
eOne Films release AMERICAN ASSASSIN Friday, September 15, 2017.
