Beginning August 25, audiences under the age of 25 will be able to take advantage of the Under-25 Festival Rush Pass. For just $29.00 (taxes + fees included), pass holders will be able to join the Rush lines at all TIFF venues for their chance to see this year’s most in-demand screenings and events for FREE.

Synopsis:

Academy Award® winner Robert Zemeckis directs this live action retelling of the beloved tale of a wooden puppet who embarks on a thrilling adventure to become a real boy. Tom Hanks stars as Geppetto, the wood carver who builds and treats Pinocchio (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) as if he were his own son. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is Jiminy Cricket, who serves as Pinocchio’s guide as well as his “conscience”; Academy Award® nominee Cynthia Erivo is the Blue Fairy; Keegan-Michael Key is “Honest” John; Academy Award® nominee Lorraine Bracco is Sofia the Seagull, a new character, and Luke Evans is The Coachman. Synopsis

Slumberland takes audiences to a magical new place, a dreamworld where precocious Nemo (Marlow Barkley) and her eccentric companion Flip (Jason Momoa) embark on the adventure of a lifetime. After her father Peter (Kyle Chandler) is unexpectedly lost at sea, young Nemo’s idyllic Pacific Northwest existence is completely upended when she is sent to live in the city with her well-meaning but deeply awkward uncle Phillip (Chris O’Dowd). Her new school and new routine are challenging by day but at night, a secret map to the fantastical world of Slumberland connects Nemo to Flip, a rough-around-the-edges but lovable outlaw who quickly becomes her partner and guide. She and Flip soon find themselves on an incredible journey traversing dreams and fleeing nightmares, where Nemo begins to hope that she will be reunited with her father once again.

Slumberland is directed by Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire & Mockingjay), written by David Guion and Michael Handelman (Night at the Museum; Secret of the Tomb) and produced by Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, David Ready and Francis Lawrence. Just For Laughs TORONTO (formerly JFL42), presented by Beneva, in collaboration with SiriusXM Canada, is back in full force this September, promising to provide audiences with the ultimate comedy festival, stacked to the nines. Running in venues across Toronto from September 22 to October 1, 2022, Just For Laughs TORONTO continues to keep their word and deliver a first-rate festival experience for all with an entirely free street festival, and the expansion of their daytime convention, ComedyCON.

FREE STREET FESTIVAL

Conveniently located in the city’s downtown core, close to transport links, this epic, three-day outdoor comedy celebration will feature an accessible site together with a varied and eclectic program of entertainment with something for everyone to enjoy – including both local and international comedians, DJs and much, much more.

Running from September 23-25, 2022, on a 130,000 sq-ft site at Front St. E and Berczy Park, the inaugural free street festival will feature a large main stage BEVENA STAGE presented by Beneva, food trucks, bars featuring Muskoka Brewery beers & Muskoka Spirits Hard Sparkling Waters, local area restaurants, art installations and other activities in collaboration with Toronto’s arts communities. The first of its kind, Just For Laughs TORONTO’s street festival will boast daytime and evening programming, including performances from an array of comedy and music performers, many of the acts reflecting Toronto in all its diversity.

The nine-piece crew have been electrifying audiences around the globe with their powerful fusion of Chicago-House, funk, hip hop and R & B, all topped off with Craig’s soulful voice, edgy humor, and improved crowd participation.

The members include bassist Ethan Farmer, drummer Asa Watkins, guitarist David Sampson, saxophonists Lakecia Benjamin and Reggie Hines, trumpeter Wynston Byrd, percussionist Bendji Allonce, and Craig’s younger brother and music director/keyboardist Chris “Rob” Robinson. Monét X Change: Born and bred in New York City, MONÉT X CHANGE is a comedian, singer, and actress and one of the winningest contestants in Drag Race History. A 25-year veteran of the underground Hip-Hop scene and turntablist community, DJ Killa-Jewel has rocked the decks across Canada, the U.S., Europe, Asia and Australia at some of the most prestigious clubs, concerts and festivals to date. Well-known for her collaboration with Thud Rumble’s DJ Q-Bert in his Do It Yourself Vol. 2 DVD, and trained in classical music, she spent years fusing Hip-Hop with the theatre milieu by composing “turntable music” live for theatrical productions, and touring extensively with Canadian actor and director Robert Lepage on his highly acclaimed productions Zulu Time (Co-produced by Peter Gabriel) and The Buskers Opera. She marries two different sonic worlds; one for the hardcore turntablist fans who enjoy a range of different scratch techniques, and the other for those whose ears are more attune to the time signature and electronically-synthesized sounds of modern-day trap music.

Jerrod Carmichael: Jerrod Carmichael is evolving the landscape of comedy with his groundbreaking work as a performer and creator in stand-up, television and film. Last year, Jerrod released Rothaniel, the deeply personal HBO special directed by Bo Burnham that is equal parts conversation, confession and comedy routine. Prior to, Jerrod was an executive producer on the hit Hulu series Ramy, and produced the FOX series REL. Jerrod starred in, wrote and produced the hit NBC series The Carmichael Show. On the big screen, Jerrod joined the cast in Michael Bay’s Transformers: The Last Knight, and appeared in James Franco’s 2017 film, The Disaster Artist. He made his directorial debut with the film On the Count of Three, which premiered at Sundance 2021 to extensive critical acclaim. He is also known for Sermon on the Mount and Home Videos, a two-part HBO special released in 2019 that carries intimate conversations with the women in his family after returning home to North Carolina for candid discussions on sex, confidence, beauty standards and feminism.

Los Espookys: The Stand-up Show, featuring Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega, and Fred Armisen: Creators of the critically-acclaimed HBO series Los Espookys, Ana Fabrega, Jolio Torres and Fred Armisen will be showcasing their comedic skills in “Los Espookys: the Stand-Up Show”.

Fred Armisen’s career began as a musician in the Chicago-based post-punk band Trenchmouth as well as the Blue Man Group. His transition to comedy came with the 1998 underground short film Fred Armisen’s Guide to Music and South by SouthWest.n 11-season veteran of Saturday Night Live, Armisen has engaged audiences with memorable impressions and characters. In 2014, Armisen was named band leader of the 8G Band on Late Night with Seth Meyers. The band, curated by Armisen, includes members of indie rock bands Les Savy Fav and Girls against Boys. Armisen plays with the band when he is not in production on one of his other projects.

Ana Fabrega is an actor, writer, and comedian. She is the co-creator, co-writer, EP and star of the critically acclaimed HBO Spanish language comedy series Los Espookys alongside Julio Torres. She has appeared as one of Vulture’s “38 Comedians You Should and Will Know”. Her comedy has also been chosen for Just For Laughs’ 2017 New Faces: Characters and for Comedy Central’s “Comics to Watch” for the 2016 New York Comedy Festival.

Julio Torres is an Emmy-nominated and WGA-winning writer and comedian from El Salvador. Torres is the star, co-creator, writer and executive producer of Los Espookys, which debuts its second season on September 16th. Torres recently released his picture book, “I Want to Be a Vase”. Illustrated by animator and designer Julian Glander and inspired by Torres’ first HBO standup special, My Favorite Shapes. Torres is currently in post-production on his feature film debut. Starring opposite Academy-Award winner Tilda Swinton, Isabella Rossellini, and RZA, Torres also wrote and directed the film. He received four Emmy nominations for his work on Saturday Night Live, on which he has served as a writer from 2016 to 2021. He currently resides in Brooklyn, NY.

Todd Barry: Todd Barry has released three one-hour stand-up specials including his latest one for Netflix, Spicy Honey. Todd is also the author of the critically-acclaimed 2017 travel memoir “Thank You For Coming To Hattiesburg”. 

Alex Edelman: Just For Us takes the audience through hilarious anecdotes from Alex Edelman’s life — his Olympian brother AJ, an unconventional holiday season, and a gorilla that can do sign language — but at its center is an astonishing and frighteningly relevant story. After a string of anti-Semitic abuse is directed at Edelman online, he decides to covertly attend a gathering of White Nationalists in New York City and comes face to face with the people behind the keyboards. The result is a hair-raising encounter that gives Just For Us its title and final, jaw-dropping twist.

Nick Thune: Nick Thune is a comedian and actor, who hails from the Great Northwest, where he spent his early years growing up. Nick’s absurdist view and deadpan wit have distinguished his unique style of storytelling mixed with one-liners. Nick has appeared on The Tonight Show 10 times, Conan 2 times, and Late Night once. He performs comedy to sold out crowds across the country, and around the world.

The Alternative Show hosted by Mark Forward: Mark Forward has done stand-up on John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show (Comedy Central), The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (CBS), Funny As Hell (HBO), and Just For Laughs: All Access (The Comedy Network). His TV work includes “Coach” on the Crave/Hulu Comedy series Letterkenny, Donny Mashman on Season 3 of Fargo on FX. Mark also has 2 one-hour Comedy Specials titled Mark Forward presents Mark Forward, or Mark Forward wins all the awards which can be seen on Crave.

Pat Regan: Pat Regan is a stand-up comedian in New York City, of all places. After three years as a house improviser at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York, he has spent the past few years focusing exclusively on stand-up. Pat has performed at venues across the city, including: Caroline’s on Broadway, Ars Nova, Littlefield, Union Hall, Knitting Factory, The Bell House, and The Duplex with his stand-up shows Unsuccessful by Choice (FKA Pat Regan: Unrepped and Loving It!) and Essgays. Pat has performed at Outside Lands, NY Comedy Festival, the Michigan LGBT ComedyFest, NYTVF, Podfest NYC, Vulture Festival, and Comedy Central’s Clusterfest. Pat has been featured in publications such as NEW YORK TIMES, OUT, VULTURE, and most recently PAPER MAGAZINE. Pat has several projects in development and is currently in his second season writing for the Emmy Nominated and Critically Acclaimed HBO Max Original series, Hacks.

#TIFF22: IN CONVERSATION WITH… SERIES UNVEILED FOR 2022 TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

TIFF is delighted to announce the audience-pleasing In Conversation With… series. The In Conversation With… series features in-depth conversations with film artists, writers and cultural figures about their creative process. Packed with emotion and cultural significance, this series offers audiences a wide range of experiences. Additionally, TIFF is proud to announce that beginning August 25, TIFF Under-25 Members and TIFF Under-25 Free Pass holders may take advantage of the Under-25 Festival Rush Pass and purchase tickets in advance.

This year’s In Conversation With… series connects audiences and film lovers around the world with some of the most talented artists working in film and television. Damien Chazelle
Academy Award–winning writer-director Damien Chazelle continually pushes the boundaries of storytelling. His feature films as director have earned a staggering 23 Oscar nominations and 10 wins. His electrifying Whiplash (TIFF ’14) took audiences and critics alike by storm, and his next, La La Land (TIFF ’16 People’s Choice Award winner), was a playful and heartfelt ode to creativity set against the backdrop of contemporary Los Angeles. First Man (a TIFF ’18 Gala Presentation) took audiences on an exhilarating ride into the space age and explored the personal story behind Neil Armstrong’s famous walk on the face of the moon. His highly-anticipated upcoming film Babylon, set in 1920s LA, features an ensemble cast led by Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. Chazelle joins TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey to discuss his artistic drive and approach to storytelling.

Viola Davis & Gina Prince-Bythewood
The Woman King marks a new high point in both Viola Davis and Gina Prince-Bythewood’s remarkable careers. While Davis wowed fans in her role as whip-smart and charismatic defence lawyer Annalise Keating in the hit TV series How to Get Away With Murder (2014–2020), the Oscar, Emmy, and Tony Award winner has also built an impressive resume leading ensemble films such as Fences (2016), Widows (TIFF ’18), and, most recently, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020). Prince-Bythewood shot onto the film scene with her beloved feature directorial debut, Love & Basketball (2000), for which she also wrote the screenplay. Since her debut, she has proven her storytelling, writing, and directing prowess again and again, focusing on stories about Black women in particular with such influential films as The Secret Life of Bees (2008), Beyond the Lights (TIFF ’14), and the wildly inventive blockbuster action thriller The Old Guard (2020). As we host the World Premiere of The Woman King at this year’s Festival, Davis and Prince-Bythewood join us for an in-depth conversation about the journey of making this stunning, paradigm-shifting film, their creative collaboration, and their respective artistic paths in Hollywood.

Lee Jung-jae & Jung Woo-sung
To say that Korean storytellers are having a moment would be a gross understatement. After more than two decades producing some of the most exciting and inventive films and television series of our time, Korean filmmakers, creators, and actors are finally receiving due recognition beyond their home country, with the recent awards-season successes of Parasite (TIFF ’19), Minari (TIFF ’20), and Squid Game. This year, the Festival proudly presents the latest films from two Korean superstars: Jung Woo-sung’s A Man of Reason, and Lee Jung-jae’s Hunt, which stars both Lee and Jung. Since their collaboration on City of the Rising Sun (1999), both have been key players in Korean cinema and TV and have been instrumental in its international success, with Lee starring in such mega-hits as The Thieves (2012), Assassination (2015), and Squid Game (2021); and Jung leading the casts of blockbuster films such as the Festival hit The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008), Cold Eyes (2013), and Steel Rain (2017). The two friends join us for an in-depth conversation about their respective careers, the unparalleled success of Korean filmmakers at home and abroad, and the process of stepping behind the camera as directors. Don’t miss this chance to hear from these two megastars in a rare joint public appearance in North America.

Eddie Redmayne
Eddie Redmayne is a master at connecting audiences with the emotional truth of his characters. Like many great performers, the theatre was his training ground. He won Tony and Olivier awards for his role as Mark Rothko’s assistant opposite Alfred Molina in Red (first produced in 2009 and directed by Michael Grandage, also at the Festival this year with My Policeman). Just this year he earned an Olivier award as the Emcee in the electrifying West End revival of Cabaret. On screen, Redmayne brought vulnerability to early and memorable roles in The Good Shepherd (2006) and as Marius Pontmercy in Les Miserables (2012). It was in The Theory of Everything (TIFF 2014) where he delivered his bravura performance as famed scientist Stephen Hawking. The role earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor and demonstrated his commitment to physically and emotionally inhabiting a character’s world. Redmayne was also a key member of the outstanding ensemble in The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020). In his latest Festival feature, TIFF ’22 Special Presentation The Good Nurse, Redmayne steps into the shoes of Charles Cullen, a former RN who is regarded as one of the most prolific serial killers in history. This special event will consider how Redmayne, within each of these roles, mines the vast depths of a character to uncover and reveal that which drives them.

#TIFF22: JASON REITMAN’S LIVE READ RETURNS FOR 2022 TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

The Toronto International Film Festival® today revealed that Jason Reitman’s Live Read will return to the Festival for an all-star event featuring a surprise cast. This year, the Montreal-born filmmaker will present a surprise screenplay in honour of his father, Ivan Reitman.

The live read is a unique event in which classic movie scripts are read by contemporary actors. A beloved film will be performed for audiences in a one-take read-through with Reitman narrating stage direction on Friday, September 9 at 3pm in the Visa Screening Room at the Princess of Wales Theatre. This year’s cast and film title will be announced in the coming weeks.

“The Jason Reitman Live Read delivers the pure nostalgia we love about our favourite movies, but charged with the excitement of live performance,” said Cameron Bailey, TIFF CEO. “This year we’re honoured to host one of his father’s movies for our audience. We can’t wait to see this event unfold!”

TIFF has previously welcomed Reitman and all-star casts for live table reads of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights, Alan Ball’s American Beauty, John Hughes’ The Breakfast Club, and William Goldman’s The Princess Bride.

Jason Reitman created Live Read in October 2011, in collaboration with Elvis Mitchell, for the film society of Los Angeles County Museum of Arts (LACMA). The hit series featured The Breakfast Club (Jennifer Garner and Aaron Paul), The Apartment (Steve Carell and Natalie Portman), The Princess Bride (Paul Rudd), Shampoo (Bradley Cooper and Kate Hudson), The Big Lebowski (Seth Rogen), and Reservoir Dogs, which featured an all-African American cast including actors Laurence Fishburne and Terrence Howard.

TIFF announced today this year’s talent development programmes and participants, including TIFF Rising Stars, TIFF Filmmaker Lab, TIFF Series Accelerator, the CHANEL Women Writers’ Network Micro Talent Summit, TIFF Micki Moore Residency, and TIFF Talent Accelerator.

TIFF Filmmaker Lab provides 20 Canadian and international directors with an exceptional professional development experience at the Toronto International Film Festival and an introduction to the global community of filmmaking. When one of them discovers he has an ancestral claim to a patch of land under a restitution agreement, five street kids from Medellin leave the city to start a new life in the country, only to find absolutely nothing is easy for five young men of no means in modern Colombia.

In this extremely bleak comedy, two security operatives (Tom Burke, Roger Evans) escort a British whistleblower (Amit Shah) and his partner (Sura Dohnke) to a remote country home in Belgium, where they await the arrival of the high-level journalist they hope will share their secret with the world.

Salt Lake (Kasia Rosłaniec, POL/SWE)
At the age of 64, Helena (Katarzyna Butowtt) announces her intention to pursue sexual experiences with other men ― much to the shock of her husband of 40 years (Krzysztof Stelmaszyk). A powerful exploration of late-life desire and emancipation.

Without Her (Arian Vazirdaftari, IRA)
As she prepares to emigrate to Denmark from Iran, Roya (Tannaz Tabatabaei) meets a strange, silent girl (Shadi Karamroudi) and decides to take her in, introducing her to her husband and children ― entirely unaware of the existential threat she’s welcomed into her home.
