EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE dominated the 95th Academy Awards tonight with seven wins, including Best Picture, Actress in a Leading Role (Michelle Yeoh), Directing (The Daniels), Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis), Original Screenplay (The Daniels) and Editing. Going into the night, the Film has the distinction of being the most awarded Film in history and further added to the tally. Yeoh made history as the first ever Asian woman to win Actress in a Leading Role.
It was a banner year for Canada also with Toronto’s Sarah Polley taking home Adapted Screenplay for WOMEN TALKING. Many were expecting her to be nominated also for Directing also, but this continued the trend of industry veterans dominating the Academy Awards this year and Polley began her career acting at the age of four.
Toronto’s Daniel Roher took Documentary for his film NAVALNY, which premiered at Sundance and Hot Docs last year to much acclaim, as a springboard to its Oscars success.
Brendan Fraser who is of French-Canadian heritage, as expected would take Actor in a Leading Role for his compelling transformation in Darren Aronofsky‘s THE WHALE, joking on-stage “This is what it’s like in the Multiverse!” a nod to EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE.

From the minds of Steve Martin, Dan Fogelman and John Hoffman comes a comedic murder-mystery series for the ages. âOnly Murders in the Buildingâ follows three strangers (Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez) who share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one. When a grisly death occurs inside their exclusive Upper West Side apartment building, the trio suspects murder and employs their precise knowledge of true crime to investigate the truth. As they record a podcast of their own to document the case, the three unravel the complex secrets of the building which stretch back years. Perhaps even more explosive are the lies they tell one another. Soon, the endangered trio comes to realize a killer might be living amongst them as they race to decipher the mounting clues before itâs too late.
âOnly Murders in the Buildingâ hails from co-creators and writers Steve Martin and John Hoffman (âGrace & Frankie,â âLookingâ). Martin and Hoffman executive produce along with Martin Short, Selena Gomez, âThis Is Usâ creator Dan Fogelman and Jess Rosenthal. The series is produced by 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios.

In 1955, Veteran JB PeĂąa (Jay Hernandez) and his wife move to the small town of Del Rio, Texas. He gets hired as the school districtâs superintendent. Itâs there that he sees a glimpse of himself reflected in a group of five Mexican-American students. The students work as caddies outside school hours. JB catches them playing the sport one night and relishes in their potential. He offers them the chance to be the schoolâs first golf team. The rest is history.
Based on the true story and critically acclaimed self-published book by Author Humberto G., The Long Game is an uplifting underdog story. Itâs a story of finding ones worth in a world that repeatedly puts you down. These five young men face racism every day. Theyâre unwelcome in local restaurants and are put down by the white men they caddy for. Director Julio Quintana brings us into their world, reminding us of the time in which these men lived.
Some might think that weâve seen this story before, but not quite like this. Itâs told through the love of golf. Each of the young men loves the sport and are wildly talented at it. Quintana tells us all we need to know about the sport and delves into the camaraderie of the teammates. His Cast of young Actors is outstanding. Their energy is palpable and they hit each beat with nuance and precision. The stand-out is up-and-coming Julian Works who plays Joe, the leader of the group that carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. Hernandez also shines as a man willing to stop at nothing to see these young men succeed.
Although this story is formulaic, it delivers an uplifting poignant story of five young Mexican-Americans that we wonât ever forget.

What better stage for 299 QUEEN STREET WEST to debut than at a Festival like SXSW, where Music, Film, Television and Comedy intersect? This third Documentary from Toronto Filmmaker Sean Menard (The Carter Effect) explores the great cultural impact of MuchMusic in its iconic Queen Street headquarters. For any Canadian whom like myself grew-up throughout the ’80s and ’90s, the groundbreaking Music Television Station forever will be embedded into our generation’s identity. In fact, it is difficult to talk about this Film without feeling emotional and proud that we were there to witness the era.
MUCHMUSIC launched in 1984, driven by a focus on Music and Artist. Many an icon has walked through their halls, interviewed by Video Jockeys – some who came in with very little experience – but somehow were people we saw a bit of ourselves in, entertaining us from days on-end as kids on weekends and summer vacations. We were one of those kids who would wait glued by the TV set for a Madonna video to be played. We hate-watched Electric Circus, a one of a kind Dance Music program that gave a voice to Toronto nightclub culture. We would queue the studio’s Queen Street entrance during the MuchMusic Video Awards (MMVAs) for a glimpse of Avril Lavigne and Destiny’s Child, hoping for an autograph.
The bright light that was MuchMusic would dim throughout the 2010s as we entered the era of YouTube for Music Video consumption and Bell Media‘s acquisition of the network would lead to a change in format geared towards non-scripted Television. It’s 2023 and it’s been five years since we’ve seen the MMVAs, an annual event that took over the City ever Father’s Day, making us feel awful for abandoning our fathers every year, leaving us incredibly sunburnt. We really had it great in Toronto.
Menard lets the voices of MuchMusic tell its story through archives and voiceovers. Denise Donlon, David Kines, Sook-Yin Lee, Namugenyi Kiwanuka, George Stroumbolopoulos, Bill Welychka, Monika Deol, Steve Anthony, Michael Williams, Tony “Master T” Young and of course our all-time favourite, Erica Ehm (she even serves in a Consultant capacity for the Documentary) all are participants. So many fascinating stories how MuchMusic had evolved from very little structure to becoming a mandatory stop for the world’s top musical acts in amplifying the message about their new music. MuchMusic was always about the relationship between Artists and their fans and its legacy lives on to this day.
One, there is the nostalgia factor about 299 QUEEN STREET WEST that captures that same magic spell MuchMusic had over us in its heyday. But it truly is the compelling behind-the-scenes stories the network’s talent of what it was like interviewing the world’s biggest stars and ultimately for some what it felt like to fall out of love with their jobs that make this a must-watch. A phenomenal Documentary. Hoping this gets the TIFF treatment this Fall as it deserves it.

In 2014, Francine, a Social Scientist, and her partners launched Plan C. The purpose of the network was to spread information about how and where to buy abortion pills online. The organization now includes many people from advocates, midwives, and doctors. Director Tracey Droz Tragos first begins documenting the group in 2019 and follows them all the way through to the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
This Documentary would feel urgent at any point throughout history. Yet, with the current political climate, we find ourselves in it feels all the more critical. Tragos educates us on the abortion pill, allowing us to form our own opinions before we get into the harrowing stories of those who gained access to the pill and of those working with Plan C.
Throughout history, there has been a stigma attached to abortion. With this Documentary, Tragos helps in ending that stigma. She achieves this by showing us the challenges women need to face in order to get their hands on the pill. A pill that is completely safe and FDA-approved. It even allows the woman to be in the comfort of their home, surrounded by who they want when having the abortion. Rather than going to a clinic that has Pro-Life protesters screaming at them as they enter.
Additionally, Tragos puts the focus on those working at Plan C. She lays out the laws surrounding abortion, the unrelenting bravery of the heroes working at Plan C, and the stories of those whoâve helped gain access to safe abortion. Therefore, giving a well-rounded view of abortion in America.

Success has come quickly for Nessa Barrett, whose Toronto stop of her Young Forever Tour got upgraded to The Phoenix after selling-out Opera House originally. The 20-year-old Singer-Songwriter from New Jersey, got discovered and signed to Warner Music after uploading music to TikTok. In 2022, she released her debut Album, for which this Tour is named after. She played a packed house, performing a 17-track set which due to crowding, saw a couple fans near the front of the stage, faint. Barrett had stopped her show twice to do wellness checks.
Barrett sounded amazing, showing-off a Gold certification for breakout hit “Die First“. She bravely has tackled mental health and the notion of death in her music, herself having battles of her own. Her fans appreciate her vulnerability and candidness and we saw exactly why she is the Queen for a new generation.
Supporting Barrett was Isabel Larosa, whose hit “i’m yours” gained lots of traction on TikTok in both its original and sped-up versions. She performs alongside her brother Thomas, who produces her Music. So much talent!

Hannah (Hadley Robinson) is a young fashion designer barely keeping it together under the weight of mounting anxieties. She keeps having sharp pains in her stomach due to all of the stress and one night, the pains get so bad that a literal appendage with eyes and a mouth violently pushes itself out of her. This monstrous entity can talk too and it seems keen on fueling her anxieties.
I am not going to lie to you â I laughed out loud the moment the âAppendageâ appears. Kudos to the behind-the-scenes team for doing all the effects practically, but this ghastly creature is more hilarious than it is terrifying. That is, until Writer/Director Anna Zlokovic pulls the rug out and Hannahâs life starts to get increasingly more twisted as a result of this literal growing manifestation of anxiety and self-doubt. Zlokovic has adapted from her own wicked Short Film here (starring SXSW Queen Rachel Sennott as Hannah) and makes some very interesting choices along the way. Sometimes they are predictable, sometimes unpredictable, and other times positively outrageous. Not all of it works unfortunately, with some subplots and ideas introduced and forgotten within the same breath. I admire the ridiculous swings the film takes though and its lean and mean running time. I just thought there would be more to it.
All of that said, Robinson is terrific, absolutely relishing in the chaotic journey Zlokovic puts Hannah through. She is very much lock in step with the tone of the picture and has a way with pivoting her emotions with chilling precision. Schittâs Creekâs Emily Hampshire does well in her juicy supporting turn as Claudia, who has a special connection with Hannah, and I loved the standout work from Desmin Borges and Brandon Mychal Smith (who starred together on the criminally-underrated FX show Youâre the Worst). I only wish they got even more to do here!
