Despite lots of controversy and several smear campaigns on the internet, CAPTAIN MARVEL prevails atop the Box Office with a spectacular $160 million from 4,310 theatres in its debut this weekend for Disney. The International Women’s Day release featuring for the first time ever a female superhero in the starring role, gets 79% on the Tomatometer and also an A CinemaScore.
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD lands in second with $15.2 million for Universal Pictures, a three week total of $120 million.
A MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL is in third this weekend with $11.3 million, a total $45.2 million for Lionsgate Films/Elevation Pictures.
THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART finds itself in fourth with $3.7 million, a five week total of $97 million for Warner Bros.
WHAT MEN WANT rounds things out in tenth with $1 million, a five week total of $51.9 million domestically for Paramount Pictures.
ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL fights its way to the top of the Box Office in its debut this weekend. The James Cameron production takes top spot with $24.4 million from 3,790 theatres for 20th Century Fox. It gets 59% on the Tomatometer, just short of a passing grade.
In second is THE LEGO MOVIE: THE SECOND PART with $19.1 million for Warner Bros. bringing its two week total to $66.1 million in North America.
Opening in third is the Anti-Rom-Com ISN’T IT ROMANTIC starring Rebel Wilson, with $13.3 million from 3,444 theatres for Warner Bros. It gets 68% on the Tomatometer.
WHAT MEN WANT is in its second week out lands in fourth with $10.4 million, a two week tally of $37.2 million for Paramount Pictures.
Slipping to fifth is HAPPY DEATH DAY 2 U with $9 million for Universal Pictures, a two-week total of $14.9 million.
Toronto-made THE PRODIGY is in ninth with $3 million in its second week out, bringing its total run to $11.3 million for Orion Pictures.
Rounding it all out is GREEN BOOK with $2.8 million, a total $66.2 million grossed domestically for Universal Pictures.
THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART builds upon the success of its Franchise with a number one debut this weekend at the Box Office. It opens with $33.4 million from 4,303 theatres for Warner Bros. It gets 84% on the Tomatometer. The first installment opened in 2014 with $69 million.
In second is Rom-Com WHAT MEN WANT starring Taraji P. Henson with a great $18.8 million from 2,912 theatres for Paramount Pictures. It gets 47% on the Tomatometer.
In third with $10.2 million from 2,630 theatres is a debuting COLD PURSUIT, a Remake of Norwegian Film In Order of Disappearance, starring Liam Neeson. It gets 74% on the Tomatometer for Lionsgate Films/Elevation Pictures.
THE UPSIDE slips to fourth this weekend with a still solid $7.1 million in its fifth week, bringing its total to $85.6 million in North America. STX Entertainment/Elevation Pictures release the remake of French Blockbuster The Intouchables.
MISS BALA rounds things out with $$2.6 million for Sony Pictures, a two-week total of $11.7 million.
