Synopsis:
Exploring the unlikely rise of the beloved king of the Pride Lands, âMufasa: The Lion Kingâ enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Takaâthe heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destinyâtheir bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.

North West, making her Hollywood Bowl debut, alongside TonyÂŽ and GRAMMYÂŽ Award-winning Broadway star Heather Headley and Grammy Award winner, Tony Award nominee and the voice and spirit of The Lion King, Lebo M., will join âLion Kingâ franchise originals Billy Eichner, Bradley Gibson, Ernie Sabella, Jason Weaver, Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane and special guest Jennifer Hudson on the Hollywood Bowl stage for the previously announced âDisneyâs The Lion King 30th Anniversary â A Live-to-Film Concert Eventâ on May 24 and May 25. EmmyÂŽ Award-winning Disney Branded Television and Fulwell 73 Productions will reunite to capture the magic of these performances in the second music concert installment in their franchise, with the Disney+ Original special âThe Lion King at the Hollywood Bowlâ streaming at a later date. The special will celebrate the 30-year evolution of âThe Lion King,â from the original 1994 animated film to the 1998 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical to the 2019 dramatic live-action film.
In âDisneyâs The Lion King at the Hollywood Bowl,â fans will experience life in the Pride Lands as a full orchestra performs Hans Zimmerâs rousing OscarÂŽ-winning musical score led by conductor Sarah Hicks. Immersive live performances of the beloved songs written by Sir Elton John and lyricist Sir Tim Rice â including âCan You Feel The Love Tonightâ (Academy AwardÂŽ for Original Song), âCircle Of Life,â âBe Preparedâ and âHakuna Matataâ â will be performed by the original cast members, Oscar winner Jeremy Irons (Scar, 1994), Oscar and Tony Award winner Nathan Lane (Timon, 1994), Billy Eichner (Timon, 2019), Ernie Sabella (Pumbaa, 1994) and Jason Weaver (Young Simba, 1994). Special guests include Bradley Gibson and Heather Headley (Simba and Nala, respectively, in the Broadway stage production) and recent EGOT winner Jennifer Hudson. Cast will perform select numbers for the first time at the Hollywood Bowl, featuring the Broadway showâs award-winning and artistically acclaimed costumes, set design and innovative puppetry. For a second straight week, ANGEL HAS FALLEN claims top spot at the Box Office. Its take of $13 million from 3,336 theatres this weekend is enough to claim the throne based on few new releases to surface. By end of Labour Day weekend, it will have made $45.9 million for VVS Films/Lionsgate Films.
In second spot is GOOD BOYS with $8.8 million in its third week out for Universal Pictures, a total $58 million grossed.
In third is Disney’s THE LION KING in third with $6.4 million, a total $522.7 million in North America over seven weeks.
READY OR NOT is in sixth with $5.8 million for Fox Searchlight, a total $21.7 million made over two weeks.
Rounding things out is THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE 2 with $4 million for Sony Pictures, a total $35 million over three week.
GOOD BOYS gets a pat on the back with a debut in top spot, taking $20 million from 3,204 theatres. The R-rated Comedy with a trio of child actors including Canada’s Jacob Tremblay, gets 80% on the Tomatometer and a B+ CinemaScore.
FAST & FURIOUS PRESENT: HOBBS & SHAW lands in second with $12.5 million, a total $132 million grossed over three weeks for Universal Pictures.
DISNEY’S THE LION KING is in third with $11.7 million with $495.9 million grossed over five weeks domestically.
THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE 2 debuts in fourth with $8.7 million from 3,869 theatres for Sony Pictures, tallying $11.4 million since its mid-week opening. It gets 75% on the Tomatometer and a B+ CinemaScore. Its previous installment opened with $38 million in 2016.
Opening in seventh is 47 METERS DOWN: UNCAGED with $6.5 million from 2,853 theatres for Entertainment Studios/VVS Films. It gets 50% on the Tomatometer and a C+ CinemaScore. Its Predecessor opened with $11.2 million in 2017.
Bruce Springsteen-inspired BLINDED BY THE LIGHT opens in eighth with $4.3 million from 2,307 theatres for New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. and gets 90% on the Tomatometer and an A- CinemaScore.
WHERE’D YOU GO, BERNADETTE rounds-out the Top Ten with $4 million from 2,404 theatres for Annapurna Pictures/eOne Films, while garnering 45% on the Tomatometer and a B CinemaScore.
