About The Wheel of Time
Based on the best-selling Robert Jordan fantasy series The Wheel of Time, Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski, Gran Turismo) learns he is The Dragon Reborn—a dangerous figure from history destined to save the world … or break it. Desperate to protect him from the Dark One, an army of powerful women must reckon with his burgeoning power and encroaching madness. The Wheel of Time turns, and the Last Battle approaches. Though Rand thought he destroyed the Dark One, evil is not gone from the world. In Season Two, threats new and very old seek out the young friends from the Two Rivers, now scattered over the world. The woman who found and guided them is now powerless to help, and so they must find other sources of strength. In each other, or themselves. In the Light … or the Dark.
The Wheel of Time also stars Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl, I Care a Lot) as Moiraine Damodred, Daniel Henney (Criminal Minds) as Lan Mandragoran, Zoë Robins (Power Rangers Ninja Steel) as Nynaeve al’Meara, Madeleine Madden (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Egwene al’Vere, Marcus Rutherford (Obey) as Perrin Aybara, Dónal Finn (Rogue Heroes) as Mat Cauthon, and Ceara Coveney (Young Wallander) as Elayne Trakand.
The Wheel of Time was adapted for television by executive producer and showrunner Rafe Judkins (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Hemlock Grove). Robert Jordan‘s Fantasy series THE WHEEL OF TIME has amassed a huge following around the globe, with 90+ million books being sold. The Series gets adapted into a TV Series, arriving this weekend on Prime Video.
Don’t know much about these Novels? No worries, the Series which consists of eight episodes, takes its time doing a bit of world-building so you don’t need to have read the source material to get into this.
The Series centers around the fierce Moirane (Rosamund Pike) who is a member of a powerful organization of women called the Aes Sedai, whom have magical abilities. Moirane takes five men and women with her on an adventure and one of them could well be the reincarnation of the Dragon. They are Egwene (Madeleine Madden), Nynaeve (Zoë Robins), Rand (Josha Stradowski), Perrin (Marcus Rutherford) and Mat (Barney Harris). This however could be either a wonderful thing for the world or completely catastrophic.
Moriane is accompanied by her Warder al’Lan Mandragoran (Daniel Henney), whose job is to protect her and we await their story to unfold over the Series as they ground the story, as we get closer to discovering whom of the five contenders might be the Dragon. Pike is a real presence and we could not keep our eyes off of her, and we’re delighted she is getting this chance for the world to see her talent in such an accessible way. Above this, we love the inclusivity in the Series’ casting choices. While the Series takes place way in the past, it is years ahead in its progressiveness.
While it certainly unfolds at a slower pace, the investment should pay off for fans of the Franchise as the Series really focuses on the details and staying faithful. Visually, it is a spectacle with some really cool CGI, in ways filling the void left behind in the genre as fans await an upcoming Game of Thrones Prequel.
The first three episodes of THE WHEEL OF TIME premiere on Prime Video November 19, 2021 with new episodes weekly, until December 24, 2021.
Featuring groundbreaking technology, you can view the new Trailer for Prime Video‘s THE WHEEL OF TIME in a virtual 3-D wheel with YouTube‘s 360 Player. More on the 360 Player here.

J Blakeson’s dark Thriller follows a legal Conservator with insidious intentions. Marla (Rosamund Pike), along with her life and work partner Fran (Eiza González), have created a despicable business of defrauding their elderly clients. Their newest target is the rich and unassuming Jennifer (Dianne Wiest). After lying to a judge in an emergency hearing, claiming Jennifer has Dementia, Marla gains guardianship of her. However, Jennifer isn’t who she appears to be. Marla and Fran quickly realize they are messing with the wrong woman.
This could have been a Drama about seniors being taken advantage of by the state and appointed guardians. But thankfully, it’s a lot more than that. Blakeson adds a mafia storyline which turns this Drama into a Thriller.
At the forefront is Pike who delivers her best work since Gone Girl. She excels as the icy Marla. Being an Antagonist, she finds herself battling against an Antagonist of her own, that being Crime Lord (Peter Dinklage) who has close ties with Jennifer. Dinklage is outstanding as a Gangster who will stop at nothing to get his mother back and away from Marla‘s control. The Film’s shining moment is when Pike and Dinklage come face-to-face and we witness their shifts in power.
I Care A Lot is a cautionary tale about the corrupt web of elderly abuse. We don’t get to see these feminist characters as this in leading roles nearly enough, but we sure wish we did.
I Care A Lot screens at TIFF ’20 as follows:
Sat, Sep 12 9:30pm
RBC Lakeside Drive-In at Ontario Place
Sun, Sep 13 6:00pm
Online at Bell Digital Cinema
Review by David Baldwin for Mr. Will Wong
Marie Colvin (Rosamund Pike) was an acclaimed Journalist who lived for covering stories on the front lines of war-torn nations. She lost an eye in a grenade attack in Sri Lanka, and started wearing an eye patch while continuing to cover the worst of stories. But as the years and wars wear on, so too does the PTSD of everything she’s seen.
In his Narrative Feature debut, Documentarian Matthew Heineman has crafted a Film that is gritty, real and immediate. You can see, hear and especially feel every whizzing bullet and every heinous explosion. The Film has an aura of authenticity that is made all the more frightening by the lack of obvious CGI. Pike is very good as Colvin, and fan favourite Jamie Dornan puts in admirable work as Photojournalist Paul Conroy. But the Film has a choppy, episodic nature that acts more like a glossy greatest hits album than it does a cohesively-structured Film. It jumps around recklessly, and by the time the Film ends, it felt like everyone’s motivations were completely superficial.
A Private War screens Friday, September 14 at 6:30 PM at Roy Thomson Hall [World Premiere] and 8:00 PM at Elgin Theatre, and Sunday, September 16 at 8:45 PM at Scotiabank Theatre.
