The Fault in our Stars certainly is to blamed for Moviegoers going teary-eyed this weekend. The Adaptation of the popular Novel by John Green opens to astoundingly positive response, earning a whopping $48.2 million from 3,171 theatres in its debut for 20th Century Fox. Â This shows that Audiences don’t necessarily need huge Blockbusters to go to the Movies in the Summer – just strong stories. Just two weeks back the Studio performed phenomenally with X-Men: Days of Future Past. Â Starring Box Office Princess Shailene Woodley and Newcomer Ansel Elgort, the Film earned an A CinemaScore and an on-par 82% from Critics on the Tomatometer.
Disney‘s Maleficent in its second week out performs strongly with $33.5 million from 3,948 theatres. It already is nearing the $130 mark domestically.
Edge of Tomorrow opens solid in third with a respectable $30 million from 3,490 theatres for Warner Bros. The Action-Fantasy starring Tom Cruise saw the Megastar travel multiple continents on a whirlwind Press tour in support of the Film which has received strong reviews from Critics (89% on the Tomatometer) and Audiences (B+Â CinemaScore).
X-Men: Days of Future Past slips to fourth spot with $14.7 million in its third week out, edging closer to the $200 million mark in North America.
Godzilla finds itself in sixth spot in its fourth week out for Warner Bros., earning $5.9 million this weekend. It has grossed $185 million in its run.
Chef expands to 1,298 theatres for VVS Films/Open Road Films, just getting a Canadian release this weekend. It made $2.5 million this weekend, surpassing $31 million in North America.
Million Dollar Arm rounds-out the Top Ten with $1.5 million for Disney in its fifth week out.
There certainly was destruction at the Box Office this weekend as Godzilla clobbers its way past its competition, opening to a stellar $93.2-million opening this weekend from 3,952 theatres in its debut for Warner Bros.! Made for $195 million, the British Columbia-filmed Blockbuster from Director Gareth Edwards, just in Toronto this week, looks quickly to make a profit for the Studio. Critics the Film starring Bryan Cranston and Aaron Taylor-Johnson a 72% on the Tomatometer and similarly, Audiences gave it a B+ CinemaScore.
Neighbors after a fantastic opening last weekend, finds itself in second spot this weekend, still performing v. well with $26 million for Universal Pictures. By mid-week it should surpass the $100-million mark already.
In its third week out, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 places third with $16.8 million. To date it has grossed $172 million domestically.
Million Dollar Arm opens in fourth spot with $10.5 million for Disney. Critics gave the Baseball Dramedy starring Jon Hamm and Lake Bell (also just in Toronto this week) a mixed 59% rating on the Tomatometer. Audiences however, loved it and gave it an A CinemaScore.
The Other Woman is in fifth spot with $6.3 million in its fourth week out for 20th Century Fox. It just surpassed the $70-million mark in North America.
Captain America: The Winter Solider in its seventh week surpasses the $250-million mark with $4 million earned this weekend. It sits in eighth spot this weekend, showing big resilience.
Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return rounds-out the Top ten with $1.9 million in its second week out.
Scoring high marks with local Media today, Funnywoman Lake Bell did the rounds in Toronto in support of Disney‘s upcoming Baseball Drama, MILLION DOLLAR ARM. The Film starring Jon Hamm is a Biopic about Sports Agent J. B. Berstein who visits India in hopes of recruiting Major League Baseball Players. Bell stars as Brenda Paauwe Bernstein, his Wife.
Bell is a familiar face to Television and Movie Lovers alike. She won lots of acclaim last year in self-penned, produced and directed In A World… which saw her star as a struggling Voice Coach and had roles in high-profile Comedies like No Strings Attached, Over Her Dead Body and What Happens in Vegas. Audiences fell in-love with her in short-lived Series How to Make it in America from 2010-2011.
The expecting Mother continues to promote Million Dollar Arm with zest, just last week walking the Red Carpet at the Met Ball in New York City, her Hometown and recently turned heads with a bare-all cover for Esquire Magazine, which was shot the same day she found out she was pregnant!
We caught-up with the likeable Actress today and she was awesome to stop for a quick Snap despite being in a rush. We took a moment to wish her all the best with her Baby after she completed a busy day of Press which saw visits to City‘s Breakfast Television, CTV‘s The Social, eTalk and more.
